New features in this maintenance release for Presto 1.0:

This maintenance release of Presto 1.0 includes a modified version of the Presto!PPP package that fixes a problem connecting to Internet Service Providers such as AT&T WorldNet that require CHAP (Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol).

It also contains a minor change to allow easier setup for SpryNet by making the default PPP script the SpryNet service connect script. You can still edit PPP connect scripts as described in the User's guide for other service providers that require it.

If you are upgrading from the earlier Presto 1.0 release, you only need to replace the previous Presto!PPP package with the new package contained on the distribution disks. The Presto!PPP distributed with the 1.0 release is marked with version 1.103, while the improved package is marked as version 1.106. This version is backward-compatible with previous versions.

New features in Presto!Mail:

If the POP login and password you entered in the Internet Setup scene are invalid, Presto!Mail displays an announcement to tell you so. Return to the Internet Setup scene to change the information.

If you have multiple providers but you want to check just one e-mail account, you can configure the Internet Setup information so that more than one provider checks a particular POP account. This is like having a universal mailbox. For example, when you're travelling you may want to use Compuserve to check your Netcom POP account because Compuserve can provide 800 numbers for toll-free dialing. To configure the Internet Setup so that more than one provider checks a particular POP account, enter the POP account information in the Internet Setup scene for each provider that should check the e-mail account. If you haven't already done so, enter the information for your POP account in the Internet Setup scene and touch Add to create a provider card for the ISP. Once you've created a provider card for your POP account, follow these steps:

1. From the Diner, touch Menu to go to the Internet Setup scene and then touch new to create a new provider card.

2. Use the choice box to select the Internet service provider for the additional provider (Compuserve, for example).

3. Type the information requested. In the fields Mail Login, Password, POP serv, and SMTP serv, type the same information that appears for the ISP of your POP account (Netcom, for example). If you're not sure what appears in those fields, review the information on the provider card beforehand.

4. Close the Keyboard and then touch Add to create this provider card.

New features in Presto!Links:

Presto!Links now checks the amount of space available prior to downloading Web objects. If you have very little storage space left on the storage device containing the Presto!Links package, you will be asked to throw out some items until there is more space.

Option-tapping the globe while connected to your ISP returns you to the Presto!Links scene.

Internet Service Provider Notes

If you're using a Metricom modem with the Ricochet service, be sure that your modem's firmware is at least revision 2.0.4 (contact http://www.ricochet.net for details on upgrading). In setting up a Ricochet modem, you may enter the Internet Setup scene and select Ricochet. The access number to dial is '777 (the leading quote mark is important!). You should leave the PPP login and password fields blank, as the Ricochet network uses your modem's serial number to identify you for billing purposes.

If you're setting up a provider card for Compuserve or Sprynet, be sure to return to the provider card to edit the script for the PPP login script stamp. If you do not see the PPP login script stamp on the provider card, it is available from the Stamper. Touch the PPP login script stamp to edit the script as follows:

For Compuserve, your script should be:

If you're debugging a script, do not attempt to view the script's debugging messages while executing the script. You will see the results only after the script has finished executing.

For more information about writing your own scripts, please consult the Scripting Readme faq. You'll probably need to look at this readme if your ISP requires you to enter anything other than a login and password manually before establishing a PPP connection.

Compatibility Notes:

The Presto!Mail and Presto!Links products use dialup PPP with dynamic IP addressing to communicate with Internet Service Providers. The SLIP and CSLIP protocols are not supported and do not work with this product. Also, note that static IP assignments are not supported.

Presto!Links supports only GIF images and baseline JPEG images. Unsupported JPEG versions will result in "Indecipherable Image" messages.

The Presto!Mail and Presto!Links products are not compatible with the following packages:

Presto!Links supports only Web URLs (those which begin with http://). Depending on the server you contact, you may or may not be able to download documents with ftp (those URLs which begin with ftp://). Some Web servers will provide ftp URLs for you, and some may not.

If you're using a phone line with call waiting, be sure you deactivate call waiting before using Presto!Mail and Presto!Links. (This is done by setting up your dialing location in the phone to dial *70 prior to any phone number).

Presto!Links is compatible with HTTP 1.0 only. It is not compatible with sHTTP or SSL.

Presto!Links is compatible with HTML 2.0. Presto!Links cannot render tables or frames.

Manual Errata:

On page 38 of the manual, the URL for the Magic Cap freeware site for your communicator is incorrect. If you're looking for Magic Cap packages, you'll want to check out http://www.spies.com/MagicCap/CapPackages/.
