CujoChat: Internet Chat for Magic Cap!

What is CujoChat?

CujoChat is an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) client for Magic Cap communicators, including the Sony Magic Link and Motorola Envoy. IRC is a multi-user, real-time conferencing/chat system running on the Internet. Users talk on topic-oriented channels, such as #magic-cap, or directly with other specific users. IRC has been around since 1988, and since then it has gained quite a bit of popularity. There are usually thousands of active channels, so you can find people talking about almost anything.

For more information about Internet Relay Chat, see the excellent IRC Frequently Asked Questions web page. Note the FAQ is geared towards unix or other desktop system users, so don't be frightened away by some of the cryptic command lines referred to; CujoChat presents a very nice Magic Cap interface to much of IRC.

Download CujoChat!

Before we get on to the user's guide, download the software and follow along! CujoChat was written with the Magic Internet Kit, so it supports PPP connections via both the communicator's built-in modem and external modems, such as Metricom's Ricochet wireless modem. When installed on a communicator, CujoChat uses 90K of RAM.

This version of CujoChat, 1.0, is new as of 9/27/1996

NOTE: CujoChat is not an official product of General Magic, Inc., and is therefore released without formal support.

Using CujoChat

This guide covers the basics of setting up and using CujoChat. The software is pretty easy to use, so hopefully you won't run into problems.

Setting up CujoChat

This section deals with setting up CujoChat. If you already use CujoTerm (the terminal emulator) for TCP/IP connections, CujoChat's setup looks the same.

Online with CujoChat

Now that you're all set up, this section shows you how to use CujoChat to talk to all those other nutty IRC users.

Advanced Topics

This section talks about some special commands that you can use with CujoChat, and also a bit about how the program was written.

Other stuff

As mentioned above, CujoChat is released as freeware and without formal support. That's not to say that the author does not read the Magic Cap mailing lists and take notes, but General Magic, Inc. does not take any responsibility for CujoChat, anything that it does to your communicator, or anything you do while using it (don't take a bath with your communicator while using CujoChat).

IMPORTANT NOTE: Internet Relay Chat is an unmoderated medium, and neither General Magic, Inc. nor your Internet service provider are responsible for anything that IRC users say!

CujoChat and these web pages were written by Josh Carter, "Exception Handler" and comms hacker working in General Magic's Developer Technical Services group. On IRC I'm usually "flume" or some variant like "flume2," and I tend to lurk on the #magic-cap and #macintosh channels. Mark "The Red" Harlan provided invaluable support, namely he let me get away with this, and also provided the idea for making the CujoChat building look like an In-N-Out Burger.
