Highlights:
Catalog-based electronic store, character recognition software and fax receiving capabilities for Magic Cap communicators.
Background:
Nimble Corporation is a Seattle-based software company committed to providing high-quality software for hand-held electronic devices such as personal intelligent communicators.
Founded in 1992 as Sharpened Software, Inc., Nimble's management and engineering personnel are a small, close-knit team with an extensive background in software development. Founders William J. Adams and Michael A. Libes have published many applications on a variety of computer platforms ranging from Apple to UNIX.
Nimble owns proprietary techniques for writing high-performance software in extremely small packages and has substantial experience in wired and wireless communications. The company believes agent-style communications and distributed processing are critical in the emerging world of hand-held computing and communication devices.
Nimble has concentrated on Magic Cap since the early stages of the platform's development. "We feel that the Magic Cap platform is clearly the most powerful and easiest to use for developing mobile applications," said Ken Sherman, chairman of Nimble.
Nimble Corporation owns Outfitters Direct, a software development company with a flagship product called Outfitters Direct(tm), an electronic store that offers the latest software and accessories to Magic Cap communicators. Outfitters Direct utilizes software written and licensed from Nimble Corporation.
Nimble has two applications operating on Magic Cap -- Scribe and Fax/Receive. In addition, Nimble Corporation does contract work on Magic Cap for clients, including Sony, Motorola and Matsushita.
Application:
Outfitters Direct is a catalog-based electronic store for software and accessories. It comes bundled on the Envoy Personal Communicator from Motorola and the Magic Link PIC-2000. Users can download the catalog, and browse it off-line to select the items they wish purchase. The purchased software is downloaded and installed automatically on the Magic Cap communicator.
Scribe is character recognition software that allows a user to hand-write onto the screen of the Magic Cap device using the stylis. The handwriting is translated into ASCII characters and can be stored as typed-in text.
Nimble Corporation is currently developing Fax/Receive, software that allows Magic Cap communicators to receive faxes. By connecting to a telephone line, users can receive faxes from any fax machine. The entire fax can be viewed on the screen or users can zoom in to read detail.
Benefits:
Outfitters Direct
- It ensures safe transactions through the use of a proprietary secured data link over a direct connection.
- Outfitters Direct can help in distributing software for beta testing.
- There is no monthly fee or connect time charges for using Outfitters Direct.
Scribe
- Hand written notes can be translated into typed-in text with this fast and accurate character recognition software.
Fax/Receive
- Magic Cap communicators will be able to receive faxes from any fax machine.
