Subject: "Zombie" Magic Link

Hi all -

My PIC-2000 has become one of the un-dead! After hosing it a few days ago
(I even have two simultaneous "cleaning up" messages on the screen), I
decided I had no choice but to pull the batteries and start over. However,
both batteries have been out for over 12 hours now, and I can't get a cold
restart out of it. When it powers back on (which usually also requires the
'reset' button), it still displays the "broom" scene, then shortly
afterwards beeps and displays the "cleaning up" message in a frame with the
twirling hat. It will cycle between these forever, apparently.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Nancy

Nancy,

Your suffering from "Magic Addiction", which is very
common amongst magic link users.

It starts out with discovering that there's more to life
than the stuff that's built in, and you go into download
syndrome. Then you carry it around and fell like an airhead
if your magic link is not on your person.

       " I'VE BEEN THERE MAN!"

The same scenario happened to me. Did you take the
back up battery out. The unit should come back to life after
10 minutes and return to the state when you first got it.
I hope you have been backing up your data.

If it doesn't work, rent "The Exorcist", and follow the steps very
closely. Don't stand next to any windows!

Dear MAGICCAP@BROWNVM.BROWN.EDU,

Well, if Nancy has the addiction, then I'm not that far behind! ;)

Seriously, can all the bugs on the pic1000 be worked out with the 1.0f patch?
Sometimes the last piece of mail won't leave the out box. I hope I won't
have to sene my pic in. Taking the batteries out does the trick, but I get
tired of doing that.

Subject: Interest in New Fonts for MagicCap?

As a typeface designer, I was wondering if there would be sufficient demand
to port some new bitmap fonts to MC devices. I recently released a new set
of shareware fonts for Mac and PC, and thought it might be nice to port
them over to MagicCap.

The questions I have are thus:

  * Would people actually pay for new fonts - if so, how much ($.50, $1, $5?)
  * How much space would you allocate for fonts (I think each point size is
10-15k)
  * How would you like to register/pay for shareware:
        - via e-mail
        - via the WWW
        - Postal Mail
        - Using cash, check, credit card, first virtual, purchase order

Thanks in advance for your replies!

That's what I thought, too. I have since left it for another six hours
(backup battery lying quietly on my desk next to my RAM card, and main
battery pulled out), but the results are the same. I suppose _I_ could be a
self-contained energy source, in which case I could join the carnival
circuit, make a bunch of money, and not have to worry about my Magic
addiction. But I think the most likely alternative is to call Sony on Monday :(

Thanks for trying!

If you end up calling Sony on Monday and have to send the unit to them, they
will usually pay for Federal Express pick-up and return if you ask them to
and tell them you cannot live without it. They are really very good about
repairing and returning with a GREAT turnaround time. I have had to use
them twice when I first received my unit and within the first three or four
months and found them fantastically service oriented. You will be pleased,
unless they have changed in that regard.

  Nancy,

Although you have had the RAM card out while trying to wipe the
device, have to attempted to turn on the device without the RAM card
inserted? If the data on the RAM card has become garbled, due to dead
batteries or whatever, its possible that attempting to boot the device
with the RAM card inserted will cause just the problem you are
encountering. The solution is to boot the device with no RAM card
inserted, wait until you've got control, and then hold down the option
button while inserting the card. It will ask you if you wish to set up
the card for use with the Magic Link, and that all data will be erased.
Things should be ok after this.

If this isn't the problem, and you've left the device without the
backup and main battery and no power supply, then Sony support does seem
to be the remaining option to try.

the power adapter unplugged, AND the RAM card removed for several hours,
and its still doing an endless cleanup. have been

Magic,

Bring on the fonts! Charging some shareware price for them is cool with me.
I woyld give up about 50K for a font pack. If there are many packs I could
choose which one to load.

Mark.

One font I would be VERY interested in is a non-proportionally spaced
font, such as the 9-point typewriter font included in Farcast, but which
you could apply to incoming e-mail to make it more readable.

Boy have they changed. Sony Electronics refuses to fix my 5 month old =
unit
unless I send them more money than I spent on the unit. Here is my =
story.

My unit developed a crack in the lower screen. The writing surface was
completely undamaged as was the case (except for the snaps that fell =
off).
There was not even a scratch on the case, I keep it in the deluxe leather
case at all times except when in use. Yet they are trying to claim the
case was damaged. Any damage to the unit other than the screen was put
there by Sony. Hell, they have no trace of where the unit was for 3 =
days.
The post office delivered it on Wednesday (signed for and everything) but
customer service claims it did not receive it until that Friday. This is
not what I would consider quick by any stretch of any imagination. =
Bottom
line is that there is no trace of where the machine was for 2-3 days. =
Then
after this fantastic service, they want to charge me $400.00 to fix the
unit. If this is how Sony stands behind their products, it looks like it
is time to find another PDA. With service like this, Sony should be put
out of business. Oops, Sony Electronics, Sony New Tech's service is =
second
to none. Toby, Greg and company do a wonderful job.

I was wondering if anyone had any information (or information on where I

or another Magic Cap device (definate has the leg up if I can find one =

it is inexpensive and not made by Sony).

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

I have heard of someplace on the net selling brand new Envoys for under
$400.00. You may want to check some of the "other" magic type sites as I
think that is where I may have seen same. Possibly Dark Dan's or something
similar. Me, I would stay with the ML as after almost two years I just love it.

I'll second that! I don't have a MagicLink yet, but plan to buy one very
soon and intend to use it for Internet email (Hopefully with RiverRun's
VT-100 emulator... does anyone have any comments about that?) dialing into a
Unix-based system. A non-proportional font would be *very* desirable with
Pine and many other Unix program I use online.

The price I saw was like $700.00 & $1,200.00 (150). But I do agree with
you about staying with a Magic Cap device. I would love that if it is
affordable. I just checked the site for the Windows CE, and saw lots of
unproven promisses. Being a user of Windows 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 95 excuse
me if I do not get excited over the first product out of the doors in
Redmond. Microsoft is real good at putting crap out on the market so =
that
businessmen can error test it for them. Beats me why the general public
puts up with it. However, when I bought my ML I compared it to the MP120
and laughed, however, today I say the MP130 and I think that the decision
will be much tougher this time. After looking at the internet suite and
the time tracking software from iambic Software this is getting to be a
horse race. The thoughts that are going through my mind right now is =
this:

  - I have quite a few devices and software (though most of it is =
freeware)
that I am not sure if I will be able to reuse on the Newton.

  - I have asked on this list and to a site in Japan that claimed to do =
MC
development for a time tracking program. I have yet to see anything but
other people asking for the same thing. There are two programs from =
iambic
Software they call TimeReporter and Action Names but it only runs on the
Newton and the Pilot. There is no Magic Cap program that does anything
like it.

  - I would love to use pocket quicken, but the PIC 1000 is underpowered =
to
run it and still have memory left to run the all the internet stuff. The
PIC 2000 decided not to include it and Intuit will not supply it. It is
also not offered at all on the Envoys. This is not a problem on the
Newton. I am encouraged though by the developmet program started by the
members of this list, but untill I see it working...

  - I love my PIC 1000, I am used to it, I do not really want to learn
something new. If Sony would stand behind their product, this discussion
would not be happening. I LOVE my PIC. I was even considering upgrading
to the PIC 2000, but some of the missing features like the ability to use
the phone (I do not like the speaker phone concept) and missing pocket
quicken made me think twice. But now, I am glad I did not buy that from
Sony.

I know that I have quite a bit to think about. The way that I figure it,
anything less than $400.00 I need to consider. Over that, I just can not
justify the cost compared to what the Newton now offers. That is what =
Sony
tried to rip me off for. Taking that money and giving it to their
competition sounds great to me. (yes I do know that I am bitter, I =
expect
a machine to last longer than 5 months and if it doesn't the company to
stand behind it)

Thanks for your support

did you see the post from the guy that had an Office Depot unloading PIC
1k's for $50.00? There's your answer.

Though generally I have received excellent service from Sony, I did have a
tech once who refused warranty service without the receipt. Like May of
this year, and the PIC 2k had only been shipping for a few months. I
called back the next day and spoke to a different tech, and it was a piece
of cake... for what it's worth.
