Subject: Weird power ups
Just last night I was laying with my PIC-1000. I had it's magicBus
connected to the modem port on my Mac, and was playing around sending
characters over to it (into CujoTerm). Connection worked fin, but I had
a couple problems:
* No characters would make it over...they turned into giberish on either end.
* I tried sending a message "Hello" a couple thousand times and my PIC
crashed. We're not talking "Your Communicator is Cleaning Up", it
fried. THe screen had all vertical lines, and, taking out the main
battery was the only way to turn it off. After that, it would beep when
you turned it on, but nothing would happen, so I removed the batteries
and powered it back up. I've only had this happen once before, in an
entirely unrelated incident.
So, any suggestions on how I can make this work?

Option calculations.
Pretty much, I'd like to never have to haul my HP17B around.
Because you do Billable Client Engagements, have you thought about a
billable time tracker? (Cf. TimeReporter or Time Accountant in the Newton
world.)

Just take a look at the guy's website. It's so incredibly lame it's sad. I
especially enjoyed this bit:

When, oh when will we reach that magic number? Probably when he gets a
spellchecker. Perhaps we should write Apple and ask them if this is the
kind of numrod they want "evangelizing" the Newton.

One fearure that would be very desirable is the ability to operate the app as
a stand alone that does not rely on a larger desktop app. If the package were
capable of printing hard statements and reports, and old data could be
archived in separate packages that you could store on disk via Magic XChange,
this functionality could be realized.
My gripe against Pocket Quicken was always that it was good as far as it went,
but the combination of not being able to print from it and being unable to
archive old data caused the ROM package to get larger and larger, and backing
up meant copying the whole PQ package, which is some200+k to start with. It
was useful to me but it is only truly effective as a package that turns your
communicator into a data collection terminal for desktop Quicken. I have come
to feel about it in the same way I feel about the AOL package- not intended to
provide a quality service on your communicator, but intended to lead you into
a purchase/subscription of another product, which is where the real money is
made.

Josh,
What program were you using on the Mac to send stuff? Sounds like
some of your communication settings are incorrect (baud rate, parity,
stop bits, emulation perhaps, etc.). What communication settings have
you chosen on both sides?
As for the strange crash, its hard to say how the device would react
to a massive overflow of incoming data. Somewhere a buffer or stack
probably got really full, that normally doesn't under normal
circumstances.

I was going to use IBM as an ISP while travelling in Europe but found out
that much of their network there is still using SLIP connections. Presto!
needs PPP. So I went over with a Sprynet account (this was back in August)
and couldn't connect. The newest PPP Presto! package wasn't available then
which is supposed to fix the problem of connecting to Sprynet. In the end,
I was stuck with AOL and having to pay their hefty international connection
fees. Sadly, Presto! didn't pan out for that trip. I'd be interested to
know if anybody out there is successfully connecting to Sprynet in Europe
with Presto!. Sounds like this would be the way to go with the coverage they
have. By the way, connecting to Compuserve with the Conpuserve companion
works well in Europe. It's just that the program doesn't integrate
cohesively with the magic cap OS.

Before Phoneday was available, some of the Sony people in England used the
following trick to get around the fact that the access code to dial an
international number from England had changed:
(1) They set up two locations on the communicator: (1) The first location
was in the U.K. for making domestic calls; (2) In the second location, they
pretended that they were in Germany (or Italy) which used the same
international access code as the new code in England.
(2) When ever they wanted to dial an international number from the U.K.,
they temporarily switched the set up location to the Germany location.
Then when the wanted to make domestic calls they switched back to the U.K.
location.
It's a bit of a bother, but you may be able to do a similar trick using
creating a Netherlands set up location.

OK you asked for it:
1) I would also like to pipe in for the ability to archive data to a

total credits, total debits. Then as the user marks records, it shows a
total and does some simple arithmetic and when everything balances, have
the one or two automatic entries added.
