   Peter,

Actually, InkWriter doesn't perform as a handwriting recognition
package. Its more of an approach in the other direction; word-processing
features applied to your actual handwriting. It works rather well in
conjunction with Graffiti, as InkWriter's notebook accepts typed
characters (from the keyboard or any of its third-party variants) just
as easily.

Its was most likely I who touted PenCell's ability to print in full
size, as I have been recently advertising my 'ancient' Magic Invoice
System package to demonstrate just that capability
(http://www.spies.com/lderossi). It would probably be a bit of a
nuisance to use this method for random document generation though since
there's certain pre-setup required, like setting the appropriate column
widths.

Dear Magic,

A couple of key questions from a person who has been playing with my Link over
a dinner table (below are her enquiries...) Can anyone shed any
enlightenment?

I'm another Go afficianado (Go is it's Japanese name; the game's also known as
Wei Ch'i or Paduk, in Chinese and Korean respectively) and would like to see a
Go application for the Magic Link. The rules are not really similar to Reversi.
While programming the Envoy/Link to play against you might be great, I would
think a much easier program could be written allowing only two live players. If
it was decided to forgo the "play against the computer" feature, then (apart
from the graphics, "reset/start", and "placing the gamepiece" functions) the
only essential item to be tackled would be writting the script for removing a
captured piece from the board and keeping a tally of each player's respective
captured pieces. While I don't have the programming capacities, I'll help "on
the fringes" if its of use.

Can all you people post your messages in the newsgroup
magic link or something like that. If we all did, then you'd
see more people notice the magic cap systems and know that it
exists.

Believe me, if I could I would. I'm in the process of finding a decent isp,
and when I do, i will.

BTW, isn't there a list that's supposed to mirror the magiccap newsgroup?
 I've sent mail through there.

It's highly unlikely because of a number or reasons. First is the tight
hardware/software integration in the CE devices. They are short on RAM and
lack sufficient expansion capabilities to handle the considerable size of
the Magic Cap system. Another geeky reason is that the CE devices are based
on new-ish RISC processors (not Intel x86), making porting something of a
challenge (understatement!).

Hi Marty,

   Jacqueline,

Yes, similar to magiccap and magicdev, magicdst is a mirror of the
comp.os.magic-cap newsgroup. You can subscribe to it just like you can
the other two, and post to it the same way.

Jacqueline,

Well, yes. But pretty much *everything* is slow at 2400 baud. If you expect
desktop browser performance you'll be disappointed.

However, there are settings to disable graphics processing, and this can
make the experience a little more tolerable. I don't do all that much
browsing on my 1K (I keep meaning to set up my WorldNet account and use
that strictly for my Link), and I wouldn't recommend it as my sole means of
accessing the Web, but it's ok for the odd page here and there. Sony
actually has a page of low-graphics sites suitable for communicator use:

I use the snapshots to link namecards for significant others. On each card I put a snapshot
pointing to the other person and then change the caption of each snapshot with a coupon. It
works great!

The 'Snap' function allows you to take a 'snapshot' of the scene you
are currently at. The resulting stamp is a miniature picture of that
scene which you can bring elsewhere and tap to warp back to that scene.
You can also drop objects on the snapshot to teleport them to that scene
too.

Dear MAGICCAP List,

So, would disabling the graphics make Presto! Links more like a dial up
terminal?

Dear MAGICCAP List,

From all the responses I got about the 'snap' question, it seems like I was
the only person didn't know about its usefullness.

Question, does it take up alot of memory to have alot of 'pictures' up all
over the place?

I noticed in the latest MacZone catalog, that they now carry the Envoy, Marco,
and Motorola ARDIS PC card modem. I think this may have something to do with
Motorola's new Macintosh clones. Perhaps when someone applies to be a
Motorola reseller (for the Mac clones), they are also given a reseller license
for Envoys as well. At any rate, it's nice to see another MagicCap machine
advertised. One more step for MagicCap!

Dear MAGICCAP List,

I keep the bulk of my finances on the pocket quicken. While I manage my
checking account and cash, I keep getting tripped up on the credit accounts.

I put down everything I charge, but I still keep getting different amounts
from my statements. Is there a program that would let you compound the
interest? It's a pain to keep changing totals.

I've got a problem with my presto mail. If try to receive my mail, or
get a summary, my PIC2k loggs on and reads the number of messages I
have, the just quits after a few minutes. If I log on through Presto
Links, and connect to a URL, which only works about half the time, then
I can download my mail, maybe half of the time. If I don't connect to a
URL, I get the same symtems as when I just try to get my mail through
Presto Mail. I have a PIC 2000 with 724k free. No other apps loaded
except Magic Exchange.

Can any one tell how to fix these problems?

  Jacqueline,

Disabling the graphics in Presto!Links just replaces all pending
graphics on a web page with a generic 'Show Image' stamp, that you can
tap individually to load the graphic. The text on the page loads and
formats normally.

  Jacqueline,

Each stamp is fairly small itself, however because they're not created
as part of a package, they reside in main memory. Keep this in mind
before becoming a shutterbug. :)

Hi!

Has anybody succeeded in running Magic Xchange for Windows
with SoftWindows for Macintosh?

-- I recently bought a Windows version of the Magic Xchange
to be finally able to transfer data to and from PenCell, but
the connection quits half way, obviously due to handshaking
problems.

Any ideas?

BTW, I am sick of thinking that I should dump my extensive

Windows platform just to be able to use Magic Link
effectively!

Am I the only Macintosh based Magic Link user being let down
by IntelliLink? I though Macintosh was the platform of
choise for Magic Cap developers...

Perhaps this is obvious, but are you entering the monthly finance charge
from your credit card statement as a transaction in your credit card account
on Pocket Quicken?

I too use PQ for all my personal finances, including two credit cards. Part
of the monthly balancing procedure for me is entering the Finance Charge
from the amount listed on my credit card statement. To do this, from the
Wallet, tap Personal, then tap the folder for your credit card(s), then tap
New. Select Wtihdrawal, then select Finance Charge to enter the information.
When you are back to the transaction list, BE SURE to switch on the "check
mark" for the Finance Charge transaction. You should then balance.

Hope this helps,
Gabe

Dear MAGICCAP List,

Thanks. So, the finance charge will have to be entered every month like it
was a new charge? I was wondering if a formula, like setting a percentage
that would automatically be added monthly (on the day the statement cuts)
could be added.

Actually, if you want to move quickly from most anywhere to most =
anywhere,
I would recomend going to the spies archive and picking up a copy of
"Favorite Places". It allows you to save bookmarks of all your favorite
screens just like the snap, but places them on the option-desk. That =
will
prevent you from having to have six snap shots to the solitare game =
spread
across your entire system. One snap shot of the solitare game is stored
and can be reached from anywhere (even places you may not have thought to
put it) by option-tapping the desk then tapping solitare. It would =
really
cut down that resource problem in a hurry and is IMHO much simplier.

Disabling graphics in Presto!Links is just like disabling auto-load
graphics in Netscape. Only difference is you have to option click reload
to get all graphics, in Netscape you have a desktop button. No =
difference.
