Subject: Magic Link in the UK

Has anyone had experience with trying to get/receive email while in the UK
(or Europe for that matter)?

I will be in the UK soon for over a week and would like to not be out of
touch with my email. I wonder if I should temporarily sign up with:

1) Compuserve. They have access numbers around the world.
2) Just try to call back long distance to any Netcom number in the U.S.(it
will only be at 2400 baud since I have a ML 1000).
3) Try IBM.net They have access numbers around the world. But has anyone
been successful with using Presto Mail to use the IBM Worldnet service?

Any other alternatives?

Thanks!

You might want to check out the article I wrote for the (defunct) Linquirer
on my experiences using the Magic Link in foreign countries. A copy of the
article can be found at:

Number #2 will probably be the easiest to get working on short notice, but
also the most expensive. Long distance calls made from hotels can be very
expensive (up to 10x normal rates). #1 & #3 should work, but I suggest you
make sure you get them working here in the states first. Make sure you get
the local access numbers in advance.

CompuServe access numbers are:
        Birmingham 0121 359 4000 1200-9600
        Bristol 0117 930 4351 1200-14400
        Crawley 01293 569610 1200-9600
        Edinburgh 0131 557 5888 1200-9600
        Glasgow 0141 840 4494 1200-9600
        London 0171 490 8881 1200-14400
        Manchester 0161 436 3333 1200-9600
        Reading 01734 581818 1200-14000

AOL can be accessed from abroad pretty easily via the local SprintNet
access numbers. The access numbers in the UK are:

SprintNet:
United Kingdom 44
  Basingstoke 0125 660-0061 Up to 14400bps
  Edinburgh, Scotland 0131 459-1290 Up to 14400bps
  London 0171 973-1030 Up to 14400bps
  Manchester 0161 747-5000 Up to 14400bps

A few points:

(A) England chanced their long distance access number since the PIC-1000
ROM's were burnt. There is a freeware package called PhoneDay on the spies
site which compensates for this change.

(2) You will need to get a RJ-11 to English phone jack adaptor. If you're
staying in a hotel, you might be able to get it from the hotel. Otherwise,
good luck hunting down a phone store.

(3) For charging your battery, you will also need an electric plug adaptor
(the AC adaptor on the PIC-1000 already accepts 220v). I suggest you also
bring your original AAA battery case since AAA batteries are easy to find
all over the world.

Perhaps, Tom Yates has a few points to add as his wife recently took a
Magic Link to England.

Let me know if you have any suggestions to add to my article after you return.

Sean,
You can also prevent the default stamp from being the PL service by removing
the PL identification stuff from your name card.

I have an interesting problem everyone suggested I run by your guys:
I go out onto the net fine(with my pic 1K running links 1.1) after about 10
minutes it says, "modem unexpectedly hung up" which is no big deal, but then
the Magic Link beeps, says, "cleaning" then says, "your communicator has
experienced technical difficulties, if this continues, contact customer
support". I go to the store room, and find that it has packed up the Diner
package. What is happening? It worked find early last week, but now it seems
to be getting worse. Sometimes it says my POP password is wrong too, but not
as much as this cleaning and packing problem. Please help.
Also, I still have the old AT&T stuff in my pic, so when I try to
send mail, it tries to use personal link. How can I get it to read my other
internet service and/or erase AT&T. Any help you can give would be
wonderful. Thank you in advance
Sean

Dear Shawn Jipp
I live in Switzerland/Europe and use my PIC2000 and ENVOY every day since
their release in 1994/95 in order to get my e-mail.
Your best bet would be to open an AOL-account. Then you would be able to
connect from almost any country within Europe to the server via a local
SprintNet phonenumber.
Best regards

Below is a list of things that I think would make the
Magic Cap system more fun. You can add anything you want.

Software:
1] A tool palate for drawing. One that could expand with small icons
representing the tools so it would not take up too much screen space. You
tap on a icon and the corresponding tool cup menu pops up.
     +-----------------------------------+
     | [pencils] [text] [shapes] [lines] [arranging] [X]|
     +-----------------------------------+

2] A grabber or a scissors tool so you can cut and paste part of a drawling.
With a hand that closes when it has garbed the item to move.

3] More general mail rules. Like: Format for better reading [name of
service]. Strip headers form AOL Internet messages (those can get very big
some times). Dump mail form [name of service] with [phrase] into Notebook
pages for exporting.

4] Print as a ascii text dump to a printer instead of printing that strip in
graphics mode.

5] An answering machine program that lets you record an out going message and
small incoming message and log the messages in the phone log. Or just log
when the phone rings.
This could be one of those ram/rom card combos, so you don't have to store
the messages in the system memory.

Hardware:
1] A small thermal or dot matrix printer that prints the some width as the
screen so you can print out stuff and not have that little strip of
information on a 8.5x11 piece of paper. You could also use it to print
receipts, or labels.

2] A bar code reader that has a Y cable, so you can connect the
printer/keyboard too. The bar code reader would insert letter/number data
into standard fields just like the keyboard.

Subject: CujoChat Question

[This message may have contained graphics created by a Magic Cap device on

Just a quick question for anyone who might be able to help.

When I connect to my ISP with Cujochat I get the error:

DNS lookup failed. Check remote host name.

Well, I have, and it is correct. (I am trying to connect into
"irc.ucdavis.edu".) In fact, I have connect via my ISP to irc.ucdavis.edu and
gotten on the #magic-cap channel.

Does anyone knwo what might be causing this. The only thing I can think of is
the minor error message I get about adding a tilde before my alias.

Thanks for any help.

Subject: Trouble with mail retrieval for large messages.

I was trying to send myself the CujoChat package this weekend, using
uudecode and Preso!Mail. The message downloaded just fine until the flood
bar got to 100%, when my PIC froze and went into a forced cleanup. I know
have more than enough room to store this package, why can't I get it? I
tried sending it about three times. All without success.

I can't wait to use CujoChat, the problem is that MagicXchange doesn't work
because of an IRQ conflict that I can't resolve on my PC.

Dear MAGICCAP List,

Hmm...you know more about getting onto irc through CChat than I do.

Do you have to connect through CTerm, then go into CChat, or can you access
irc straight from CChat? Are there any FAQs about CTerm and CChat?

Dear MAGICCAP List,

In connection with #5 on list (about recording message,) isn't there
something in phone setup (or maybe the 'other services' button) about adding
things like voice mail to the ML? How would you go about that? I called
Sony asking about the possibility of adding a 'call waiting' feature (I'm
pretty surprised it wasn't added) but was told that it wasn't currently in
the works. I'd love to have it since I sometimes use the headset.

  Matt,

The problem is that Magic Cap requires approximately double the size
of the incoming Email available in order to collect it, and the
UUEncoded version of CujoChat is pretty huge! So you might try cleaning
up as much space as possible before attempting to collect the mail, and
make sure there's no other mail waiting in addition to that piece.

Subject: New Package: MagiCalc 1.2!

Hey all,

I've just finished a new package called MagiCalc, version 1.2. Its
nothing of major importance, just a floating windowed calculator that
installs into the tool cup so one might calculate while continuing to
look at a notebook page, telecard, etc. One kinda nifty feature is the
ability to rip off the face as a coupon for easy insertion in the
grocery list or whatever you might be calculating at the moment.

It is currently available at http://www.spies.com/lderossi in native
Magic Xchange format, ZIPped version of same, and a Presto!Links
retrievable CAP version as well. Its also soon to be available on
America Online in the Magic Cap file area at keyword GENERAL MAGIC.
