Subject: Magic Link 1k & Linux

Hi all,
The SML is a wonderful device but falls far short from the functionality
of a desk top machine. I have been using a lap top with Win3.1 as my base
station, but this is more and more inefficient. I have been considering
transferring my system over to a Linux machine. Does any one else use
Linux as their base station? Is there a way to get my Magic Exchange to
work? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A shell account is not available through
PrestoLinks. As someone mentioned before you
would need a terminal program and then you could
use something like Lynx if it were on your
server. Another alternative would be WebMail.
In terms of mail from a shell account. The first
version of PrestoMail is still available and can
be used in this way.

As for the second question. I don't know of any.

Subject: Collaborative Engineering Project - Kick Off

Collaborators,

Let's get the ball rolling on this project.

I propose the following:

1. All products of developing the Magic Cap Financial App will
by subject to "copyleft", similar to that practiced by FSF. That
means further development and enhancement can be taken up by anyone,
and anyone can contract with another party to provide enhancements\or
support, and be paid for labor expended in production of such,
but the source code and docs must be freely residtributed. We
will have to draft a copyleft shrinkwrap agreement prior to
public release of the project.

2. All formal project communications will be posted to
comp.os.magic-cap. I encourage even casual communications
between team members to be cc'd to the newsgroup to take advantage
of the inherent archive facilities, as well as provide a living
example of collaborative work to anyone who's interested. Interested
parties may readily supply technical hints if they are cognizant of
issues that crop up.

3. Let's distribute the work, so no one of us is saddled with the
lion's share. Let's split responsibilities into:

A. Requirements gathering and specification;
B. Architectural Design;
C. Define Integration and QA Strategies;
D. Implementation;
E. Integration;
F. QA;
G. Distribution packaging.

Some of these responsibilities are sequential; some run in parallel
(e.g., Implementation, Integration and QA). Figure out which ones
you want to be involved in, and participate procatively therein.
Remember there's no project manager here, so we're self-organizing.

I recommend that we take project communications now to comp.os.magic-cap
exclusively; use MAGICCAP to solicit requirements from the community
of interested users, and use MAGICDEV to solicit techincal asistance
from interested developers.

I'll sign up for A and B for now.

Comments? Refinements? Let's hash it out on comp.os.magic-cap, and
then compose a request for requirements for issue to MAGICCAP. We
can then formalize the requirements, and move on to the architectural
design.

Rod

Lately, a lot of people have been purchasing the PIC-1000. It's
one great piece of hardware. It truly does more than a Newton.
I liked the Magic Link so much I bought another one for my dad,
and he's loving it right now.

Correct Joel,

In he orginal release of PrestoMail/PretoLinks CHAP was not yet implemented.
We were still working everything out, and released the 1.106 build primarily
to address CHAP compliance.

I'm finally using my Magic Link (currently have the 1000) to the point where
I'm thinking of upgrading to the 2000, can anyone give me some info or tell
me where it is, about the improvements of the 2000 over the 1000?? And if
it's actually worth the money??

Thanks,

I think you are missing an essential point: viewing graphics is an OPTION
not a requirement for Presto!Links.

While it is possible (I think we even tried it once) to use River Run's
terminal emulator to browse the web using a text browser like Lynx, the
user interface for Presto!Links is specifically designed for the
communicator (e.g. no keyboard, no 80 column display, etc.) It would be
much simpler to just turn off graphics on Presto!Links.

There is extensive information about Presto!Links on General Magic's web
site at: http://www.genmagic.com/MagicCap/presto/Presto.html (and they have
telephone support at 1-888-CONJURE).

Here is the availability information from their web page:
MC Terminal Emulator is now available from River Run Software Group to
users of Magic Cap personal communicators. The Price is $119.00.

Well, here is the short version- The PIC2000 has 2 PC card slots, 2 megs of
memory, a backlit screen, and the MC v1.5 OS. The price to beat currently is
$498.95 at Egghead. If you can afford it, you can't beat that deal.

The main feature improvements are:
o Backlighting
o Two PC Card slots
o 14.4K modem
o 2MB RAM
o Speakerphone

The PIC-2000 also has Magic Cap 1.5 and a different set of software bundled
with it. (You lose Pencell, Pocket Quicken & Sony Remote. You gain OAG).

Detailed specifications are at:
http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/Magic/pic2000.html

There is also a FAQ on migrating from the PIC1000 to PIC2000 at the Sony
Electronics site.

In my view, the extra RAM is the most important feature improvement.
Backlighting & the 14.4 modem are also hardy improvements. The extra card
slot is very useful if you want to do things like connecting your Magic
Link to a cell phone.

The difference in prices between the PIC-1000 and PIC-2000 is a pretty fair
representation of the difference in features. Only you can decide if it's
worth your money. However, if you get substantial usage out of your
PIC-1000 then my guess is it is.

The PIC-2000 can be purchased from Magic Link retailers (a regional list of
retailers is at http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/Magic/where.html) or directly
from our sister organization, Sony Electronics, at 1-800-571-SONY.

I was thinking about the same thing, as like you I have the PIC1000. I
understand that a faster modem (14.4) is built in, an extra Meg of
memory, and extra PCMCIA slot and the backlit screen (comes in handy I
can believe.)

I was told that if I tried to use a faster card modem, that the PIC1000
wouldn't respond to it, and still transfer data at 2400 (and fax at
9600). Why was it made like that? Is there ANY way to overide this?

There are two issues:

1. The AOL client is hardwired at 2400 baud
2. For some reason, there is so much software overhead in the Wireless
Modem link (the only way to use external/PC Card modems in the MLink)
that performance doesn't get much better than the 2400 baud modem.

Future versions of Presto!apps that use the new Internet toolkit from GM
may work faster, I understand...

Subject: CujoChat: IRC for Magic Cap is here!

hey folks,

CujoChat for Magic Cap is here! Download it and read the docs at:

http://www.genmagic.com/Develop/MagicCap/Internet/CujoChat/

CujoChat is a Internet Relay Chat (IRC) client for Magic Cap. IRC is a
multi-user, real-time conferencing/chat system on the Internet, and
it's quite a bit of fun to use. As Shawn Jipp mentioned earlier, we
will IRC-cast the next Bay Area Magic Cap Users Group meeting on the
#magic-cap channel, so those of you not in the Bay Area can join in
online with CujoChat!

For more information on CujoChat and IRC, see the above URL. To use
CujoChat you'll need an Internet service provider that allows direct
dialup-PPP (PAP and CHAP authentication supported) and enough memory
on your Magic Cap communicator to take a 90K package. CujoChat also
directly supports many external modems, including Metricom's Ricochet
wireless modem.

Enough said! Get online and start having a great time. I'll try to be
on the #magic-cap channel tomorrow (as either "flume" or "flume2") and
chat with some of you.

Best regards,
Josh

p.s. Other stuff: Like CujoTerm (the terminal program) CujoChat is not
an official product of General Magic, Inc., and is released as
unsupported freeware. That being said, CujoChat is tested on a number
of systems and is quite solid. Trust me when I say I *love* testing
CujoChat, too!

Subject: New and exciting gadget!

I just got my MagicLink PIC-1000 from Damark, planning to take full advantage
of their 60-day trial period. After a week, I'm already hooked! Their price
was $269 and I found an NP-500H rechargeable battery at a local OfficeMax on
closeout for $39. Not bad!

My question concerns MagicExchange. I guess at one time, Sony was offering
the product FREE. Their fax-on-demand service lists it as an available
document but you can't order the document number (901, harumph). Does anyone
know who sells MagicExchange...can I find it cheap/closeout/on a bargain
table, like all the other PIC-1000 stuff? Since most of the freeware and
goodies I've found for the SML are on the 'net, I guess I'd have to have
something to transfer downloaded goodies to the SML, and MagicExchange
appears to be the only way to do that.

The SML sure generates attention whenever I take it into a restaurant and
work with it over lunch :)

Has anyone discovered a way to duplicate an appointment in week view? For
instance, I may see an event that I want to copy into other days -- but when
I click on the event to drag it, it opens up to that day. Please bear with me
if this is an obvious question!

Great mailing list -- I'm glad to be joining in. Any pearls of wisdom for a
new user would be appreciated. I can't believe I haven't discovered this
gadget before the Damark catalog... :)
