What is this package? I would like something that would allow me to dial up
to local bbs's or dial into my shell account. Is that what this package
allows? Is it free?

You will want to get a copy of "Memory Management Tips" (#330) and "Memory Card

The Magic Cap Radiomail client is only wireless. It does not have a
dial-in mode. Other Radiomail clients may, so your best bet would be to
ask them (services@radiomail.net should get you started).

To the best of my knowledge, that is a temporary problem. There are no
plans to eliminate that program.

Subject: Help! Can't find mail messages

Okay, this seems really weird to me. Recently I had a problem with
Farcast,
where my messages weren't getting processed. Toby Dunn helped me out
of that one, and now if I request messages from Farcast, they come in
and get processed fine. Unfortunately, some of my messages are just
disappearing
into the ether. I watched a message get downloaded off of AOL today,
but nothing showed up in my In Box. I used Sniffy to try to find the
author,
but he doesn't find anything when searching everywhere. The only way I can
see these items is to do a deep deep clean and then I get the option to
delete
them (there's a couple of messages from Farcast, including one from the
maintenance address, which could be important, since Farcast seems to have
decided to stop sending me broadcasts, but that's another problem
altogether....)
They all show up twice on the things to delete. If I just do a suggestions
for
discarding they don't show up. They're not in my new items package.
Waaaahhhhh...where are they???

Thanks,
Justin

Well, I just wanted to say that my Link seems to have regained its sanity.

Toby Dunn was kind enough to get in touch with me again (even though I
don't think this was really a Farcast problem) about my
problem, and it seems to have gone away. I'm now sending and receiving
messages again, thank the lordy.

I can finally get news again! Joy....

Here is a really cool idea I have been kicking around....

Radio Mail has a service which will map an email address to your skytel
pager. Check out www://radiomail.net/product/other/pagers.htm. So I was
thinking I could forward my email from my ISP to my Radio Mail email
account
and be able to receive email from anywhere/anytime. Neat huh??

I need to do an analysis on the cost of this versus an envoy with ardis.
Anyone interested in the results I will email you.

Now if only there was a two-way paging card for the Sony we'd be all
set...

FYI.

BTW: Anyone want to sell a pager card.

Dear MAGICCAP List,

By what mechanism can I tell my PIC to use a particular default mail service?
Even after dragging my AOL account stamp off my name card, some composed
letters still wind up with an "Internet via AOL" stamp instead of the
appropriate Presto stamp. Having to change postage each time is tedious.

Is the chosen service a matter of what service was last used to send mail to
that recipient, as I suspect?

TIA,

Rod

I forgot to put this on this list yesterday. It was sent out to all BAMCUG
members yesterday. Note that the meeting is TONIGHT, not tomorrow. We will
meet at 7PM at General Magic on Mary avenue near Central Expressway.
============================================================================
=======
This is your official 'ONE DAY UNTIL NEXT BAMCUG MEETING' announcement.

Don't forget...General Magic...7 PM...Brenda Halloway (guest
speaker)...hopefully more of that wonderful pizza & soda...and last, but not
least, FREE GM T-SHIRTS! (Thank you Mr. Schramm!)

Subjects to discuss:

1) Mike Matrix will tell us about the state of the WEB site.
2) I will download the artwork for our WEB site from Luke Derossi to show
everyone (if I remember).
3) Questions for General Magic from the users (sorry Mark H., it has to be
done).
4) Perhaps Josh Carter can tell us about the latest Cujo Term and how it is
different from the last version.
5) Paper copies of BAMCUG #1, #2, and #3 minutes (if I remember).

I will be bringing a Ricochet modem which I am evaluating until the end of
the month courtesy of Metricom. I hope to write an article in the next
month or so for a local computer mag about the Ricochet and Magic Link. My
temporary wireless address is: sjipp@ricochet.net

BTW, if you are wondering how I am enjoying the GDT printer cable, wonder no
more. It never arrived! I called them about 2 weeks ago and they said that
somehow the order had 'slipped through the cracks'. They said they would
still send it out gratis. I have yet to see it.

SELFISH PROMOTIONS GO HERE-->>I will be bringing a new, never before opened
copy of Presto Mail/Links if anyone is interested in aquiring it afterwards
for $25.00 (or if I don't sell it to a club member then anyone on this
Listserver is welcome to buy it too!)

                              ****LATE NEWS****
Josh Carter will also be showing and distributing his newest creation,
CujoChat!

You don't need Radio Mail to get normal email sent to your pager...
Skytel will do it directly. My text beeper has always been able to
receive text email. I just send to my numeric PIN @skymail.com

You do have to tell them that you want the feature turned on,
at least for the standalone pagers (w/o computer interface).

Personally, I like MagicCap. I think the layout of the ML is very easy
for someone to use who has never used a computer before. I don't think
the New Windows interface is there yet (or the old for that matter).

Now if Bill set guns (and his marketing engine) on Magic Cap, well...

I've read that the MailSwitcher program will allow you to do this.
Here's the description of the package off of the WebMail home page:

New! This package lets you change which mail service is used by default
for sending Internet e-mail. This is particularly useful for WebMail
users who would prefer
to use a mail service other than the default.

I've thought about this question a while, which because of the Microsoft =
announcement, has prevented me from immediately buying a ML. I wanted =
to know if Microsoft had a better product. However, I am pretty sure =
that I will be getting a ML rather than the Pegasus. I also don' t =
think that Magic Cap would be affected too much.

The main reason is that Microsoft's version of the PDA is not in the =
same league as the ML. I hear that they will be implementing the "clam =
shell" style PDA, with a keyboard. It will be small enough to fit in =
your pocket. These spects are in direct competition with the BOSS, =
Zaurus, Casio, and the like. The ML goes beyond what a "clam style" PDA =
does...it is a Personal Intelligent Communicator, not a PDA. =20

Secondly, the interfaces are distinct. All PDAs can add names, =
addresses, notes, maybe spreadsheets...it's how it does these functions =
and ease of use.

Thirdly, which PDA comes with MIDI? Speaker phone? Solitaire :-)? Not =
the BOSS, not Zaurus, not Casio. Why? They're PDAs, not PICs.

Bottom line, I guess, is that Magic Link/Magic Cap is in a league all by =
itself. And this is why there will always be a faithful following for =
the ML.

I hope that Sony will continue to upgrade this product, and with Magic =
Cap 2.0 coming (soon hopefully) and third party Magic Cap development on =
a Windows based platform, I think Magic Link has great potential. =20

Keep up the good work, ML!
Vic

It'll probably enhance it. Not everything that The Baron of Redmond touches
turns to gold.
Besides, if the Windows interface is so great, how come Macs still sell? For
the same reason that there are a myriad number of breakfast cereals on the
market, when most contain the same nutrients and all are pleasant tasting. All
people won't want the same cereal for breakfast, just like all people don't
want or use Windows.
It will be good for MC because trendsetter Bill will get off the fence and
publically admit and espouse the PDA, and then try to hold up a flavor of
Windows as the ultimate PDA OS, which will flop, and it will be too late to
take back any of it. Kind of like christening a ship and then standing on the
ways as it is launched and letting it run you over.
P.S. When has Windows ever been anything but a memory hog? What is the one
thing PDAs generally have to get by with very little of due to power
constraints?
