I think once you begin using it and get the Where do I buy stuff behind you,
you will not be asking that question. My PIC-1000 is more capable in many
ways than many peoples Newtons. Sony does seem to go way out of their way to
make this much harder than it needs to be. One of the biggest problems that I
have had on a day to day basis is people thinking that my ML is a toy. Just
yesterday, I was complaining to my boss how the system was set up in such a
way that I am unable to dial in an collect EMail. (my company owns an ISP).
He informed me that we only support PPP and SLIP connection. When I told him
that my ML not only ran PPP protocols but a TCP/IP stack and a fully graphical
WWW browser, his response was to hold his hands in such a way as to indicate
something the size of my ML and said On your...your...your . I then confimed
Yea, Bert, on my palmtop . The look of astonishment could not be described.
He had only seen the Newton before this and was totally unimpressed. Now,well
lets just say that there may be two new MLs in the office soon.

There is a store/mailorder place where I have always had great luck with. I
have never seen an IS office yet without at least 4-5 of their catalogs laying
arround. Their name is Elec-Tek. You can find them on the web at
http://www.elektek.com. Also, have you checked out 1-800-EGGHEAD? They are
now selling MLs

   Tony,

The Presto! products are Presto!Mail and Presto!Links. Repectively,
they enable your Magic Cap device to retrieve mail and graphically surf
the web, both through your own Internet Service Provider (using a PPP
connection). They are bundled into one product, available through
General Magic at (888)CONJURE (266-5873), or from Sony at (800)
571-SONY, extension 333. Check http://www.genmagic.com/PrestoLink/ for
the whole scoop. :)

  Alan,

AT&T has discontinued the PersonaLink service, so it is no longer an
option. You might want to look at Farcast, from Sony New Technologies,
for extensive news and stock retrieval, with 'profile' bots that watch
for articles within user specified parameters. Also, if you are
actively trading you might also wish to look at Magic Broker, also from
Sony New Technologies. It provides communicator access to the PC
Financial Network. You can learn more about both of these packages at
http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/Magic/software.html.

If you use the web for news, stocks, etc. you may wish to check out
the Presto! software bundle, which include Presto!Mail 1.5 for
retrieving mail via an Internet Service Provider and Presto!Links 1.0
for graphically surfing the web. The Presto! products do not work
wirelessly with the ARDIS network however; they require a PPP dialup
connection.

I agree with you 100%. I am a heavy user of Quicken also. I would not
of bought the Link if it did not have Quicken available. I will not
upgrade to the PIC 2000 if it doesn't have something to support quicken.
From what I have heard this seems to be a corporate problem. Intuit
wanted to have Sony sign a long term contract with them. Not only for
the PIC-2000 but for other units in the future. Sony did not want this
long of a commitment and Intuit would not accept anything less. THIS IS
ONLY RUMOR, I DO NOT HAVE ANY FACT TO BACK THIS UP. I work for a large
corporate company and I could see this happening. I am sure that both
companies would want to see the sales from this but both of them have
there long term strategies to follow. Maybe the sales numbers of the
Links were too low for Intuit to commit to the product.

I Just read another post about using Pen Cell for Quicken. Maybe this
could be a way for Sony and Pen Cell to solve the problem of not having
Quicken in the PIC-2000.

I would like to get more info on how you do this? This has stopped me
from upgrading to the PIC-2000. Maybe this is the answer.

I intend to upgrade to a second or, if available, a third generation device
sometime after the first of the year. When I do I will keep my PIC1000, and
probably use it in some fashion as a support device for the new main unit.
If the new device does not include PQ, I intend to copy it from the PIC1000,
and then pack up that original.
Since I will keep the 1000, and will only be using one copy of the software,
which I originally bought fair and square by the way, I don't feel that there
is anything morally incorrect about this. Legality is another matter, although
if the license agreement is like most others you as the purchaser have the
limited right to operate one working copy of the software on one device. Does
anyone have the license handy to check this out?
P.S.- For all you folks who can't purchase PQ for your PIC2000s-try lying to
Intuit: tell them you are beta testing a Neonet or another device in
development that you know for sure is not yet bundled with PQ; maybe you can
trick the crooks into sending you a free copy for evaluation!
(Yeah, I guess I'm kidding, but it sounds like justice to me...)

Which one is better and why?

>Which one is better and why?

I've owned a ML1000 for about 4 months now. I've played with a Newton
for about an hour or so.

First, handwriting recognition is the way to go, I hate typing on the
ML1000 keyboard.

Aside from that, the ML1000 is better. Things just work right, they way
you'd expect them to. I only use the ML1000 for PDA purposes, no
communication, but the calendar, rolodex, are supreme. PenCell and
Notepad in combination with the great filing cabinet are awesome. I like
organizing my data and I just couldn't find a way to do that as well with
the Newton.

Maybe I didn't give the Newton enough of a chance, but I wasn't
impressed. (and I really wanted to be, I am a Macintosh Software
developer and the little 6 color logo means a lot to me.)

Both are good in their own ways.

If you need a small portable note taking system, that is compatible with
your desktop PIM, then the newton is very good. There is a lot of
software shareware/freeware for the newton and most are very good. The
newton is invaluable as a place to store all the little tidbits of
information that you may have. I used it to store addresses, serial
numbers, urls, network information, and a daily log. The newton's quick
search function makes it invaluable for this type of storage. The only
bad thing about newton is handwriting recognition which some people don't
like and a slow processor which makes most processes unbearable. The
newton served me well for the last year but now I need a different type
of pda.

The magic link is the perfect size for the system administrator/internet
consumer. The screen is big enough for web browsing, has grey scale
capabilities, and most importantly a build-in modem, even though it is
only 2400 baud. I constantly need to check my email and check to see if my
internet server is up and running. My only gripe about the PIC1000 is
limited upgradability and very little software.

  Alan,

No, Magic Cap requires the use of SRAM, not Flash PC cards.
