I wonder what would happen if those of us with PIC1000s started backing up
Pocket Quicken onto disks and start distributing them. We find out how much it
goes for a copy for this platform, or if the info is unavailable then for
other platforms. Whoever wants it sends a check or moneyorder to Intuit for
the retail price (if we can determine what it is), and the purchaser gets PQ
from some kind soul that is willing to send it on disk. Kind of an involuntary
shareware approach. If the purchaser indicates in writing that they are
willing to abide by the standard license agreement that the company
promulgates with its' software, and pays the retail price for it, then what
gripe can Intuit have? They might grumble, but if you pay and attempt to
register ownership and acceptance of the license provisions, I do not think
that as the receiver and user of the software that Intuit could legally do
anything to you. The guy that made and sent the copy might be another matter.
That party might be better off staying anonymous.

Since I love my PIC 1000 so much I have decided to embark on a quest for
a used PIC 2000! Im not sure when Sony or Gen magic will allow my lowly
PIC 1000 to use a PCMCIA modem with good speed so I will just opt for a
ML with the modem built in at 14.4.

Anyone want to sell thier PIC 2000? Please send me the offers!

Yep, if I were the guy copying the software I'd very definitely want to be
anonymous. Here's what Intuit would argue:

"We're planning, or considering, launching a new version of the software, and by
copying and distributing like that, you have diluted the potential market for
the new product, and since the new software will have new improved features and
retail for a higher price, Intuit has suffered lagal damages to the extent of
the loss of the increased profit margin of the new product over the profit
margin of the old one."

Also, there's nothing that requires Intuit to accept the payment when tendered.

More interesting would be what would happen if you sent a letter to Intuit's
legal department asking for permission to do exactly that (make a single copy)
with full retail payment PLUS TAX in advance and stating that unless you heard
from them to the contrary, you would presume that they authorize the act of
making the SINGLE copy you're contemplating. I'll bet you'd get a blistering
reply and the check back faster than a speeding bullet. But if you didn't and
the check was negotiated and came back in your buyer's bank statement paid and
cancelled........

I downloaded the Algoresearch demo, and its a really neat app that has lots of
possibilities. Its great that there's a planned bookmark feature. Since the
E-texts that are available currently are not compressed in the same manner, the
Bookreader would become *really* useful if it could could compress them to be
compatible, or at least support reading such texts. I wish I could get my hands
on a copy that would allow me to bookmark! Good Luck, and release a
full-fledged version soon, Algo-guys... its a neat little app.

A big gripe. Check the PQ licensing agreement: if it's like most other
shrinkwrap agreements, the purchaser is forbidden to make copies other than
those necessary for backup purposes. Copyright law governs most current
software "sales"; copyright is about control of distribution as well as
remuneration for use of the copyrighted work. Making unauthorized copies,
even if not for financial gain, is prohibited. No copyright holder can be
involuntarily forced to change its copyright terms.

So repeat after me: to honor Intuit's copyright I will never make copies of
Pocket Quicken except for maintenance of personal backups; I will never
redistribute copies of Personal Quicken; and I will never never never go to
the local gizmo superstore and beam a copy of PQ from a PIC 1000 to my PIC
2000.

What we *can* do is write our own financial app. Anybody up for a little
collaborative engineering? I'm serious! Let's establish a working group
with a three-week horizon to work out a project approach.

Subject: has this been your experience....

I have just purchased a new PIC-2000 unit. This is my experience so far
--- have others had these problems or have I just been talking to all
the wrong people & places. I am keen on building a app on top of this
unit but quite honestly am getting a little scared because of my first
three weeks experience.

1) Because I am in Canada, I ordered a PIC-2000 from my local computer
wholesaler - he can get anything black, gray or normal market stuff so
he is competent OK ---, but Sony did not seem at all interested in
delivering the unit to his supplier in the US. After 3 weeks I gave up
and started looking around.

2) Sony would not sell me a unit directly because I live in Canada. No
joke, that's what the gentleman on the phone told me. Funny, I have a
real expensive Sony home entertainment system and they sold me that. I
was getting real worried.

3) I called around to a bunch of suppliers in the US and finally found
one unit @ PDA Direct in IL so I bought it like real fast. It's is being
shipped by FedEx as I write this. Hopefully, with Canada Customs
obliging I get to play on Monday.

4) Called up the Presto!Mail folks and bought that product. That was
easy.

5) But because PDA Direct was out of stock on the xChange for Windows I
called the maker of the product -- Intelli-Link. I asked the lady on the
phone if their software was used to download other software to my new
Magic Link unit. NO she said, the only things her software did was
transfer data to the calendar and such. But I could buy it from her if I
wanted. She even faxed me a detailed product description that clearly
states that their software is used to download other software to the
Magic Link unit. No thanks - I don't need the hassle , so I moved on to
look for somebody who understood what they where talking about, By the
way the nice lady thought Canada was overseas, not good for my software
development because I still think I need this stuff. But I did learn why
I had to study Geography in grade 5. To make sure I would not embarrass
my future employers! My teacher probably got a kick back from them.

5) So I called up the Presto!Mail guys and confirmed that I really
needed the software. The guy on the phone assured me I was on the right
track but no he could not sell me xChange, would if he could but they
did not do that. Helpful though, we had a long talk about the Magic Link
unit. Give five stars to him, if his boss is reading this give him a
raise to!

6) So I find this company called Direct Mobile USA on the WWW. But they
only have a1-800 number that's accessible in the USA. #$#%! But after a
bit of searching I get their number in a Pen Computing Advertisement. I
call up and the guy on the end of the phone sells me a copy of xChange
for Windows. Great, on the home stretch now. But I asked him why they do
not sell the Sony product anymore. He says that basically they cannot
make a living selling something that Sony is forever back ordering. To
many frustrated customers and that is bad for business.

So...

Have I really screwed up here by buying a Sony Magic Link instead of a
Newton? I do not think so, but is Sony trying to kill off the product
line or just being stupid? or is there a PIC-3000 coming out soon and
they are trying to clear the channels.

I do know that Sony is trying to get rid of the PIC-1000 product line
and flush the channels. I can't say where I got that info though.

Where is the best place to purchase such devices and software that
always have stock & have met a friendly FedEx person who will deliver
the products to Canada since they took geography in grade 5 too. Not
much use building neat stuff if the underling platform and delivery
software is impossible to get.

A cool goal would be for this new proto-app to import and export Quicken
info (both pocket and desktop) for compatibility reasons. Count me in -

Nimble Corp has a few MagicLinks for sale. The devices were used by
testers and press; and are in various conditions:

PIC-2000 - $450
  - used, no marks on screen or case

PIC-1000 - $150
  - never used

PIC-1000 - $100
  - used, no marks on screen or case

PIC-1000 - $75
  - used, no marks on screen, but 1 or 2 small wear marks on case.

All of them include the following:
  - Lithium Ion Battery
  - Manuals
  - original snap on cover
  - charger
  - phone cord

If you are interested, please call Yvonne Folan at 206.281.1101 x114 or
send email yvonne_folan@nimble.com. We'll take VISA, MasterCard, AmEx,
or a check (must receive the check before we'll send the device).

I was not seriously lobbying for people to start doing that so much as I was

Actually, I think you have the right idea. A similar product, either free or

I can't answer your first question, but as for the second, I'd vote for "just
being stupid". As far as I can tell, the product never was, and is not
currently, being marketed in a way that will encourage large numbers of
people to buy it.

Don't feel bad. I live in Honolulu and have found there are a lot of people
who don't yet know that it's a state. As for that woman at Intellilink, well
maybe the cleaning lady picked up the phone by accident, she truly didn't
know what she was talking about. Magic Xchange is the way to get new software
into your PIC-2000.

Hope your ML clears customs and you are happily playing with it soon!

Dear Magic,
I just received my coupon Presto set. It took all of five minutes to set up
with Worldnet and has worked perfectly over the past two days. I have used
the mail and selected over twenty web sites. I have even used browsers so
long as I set the amount I want returned. I have had no problems, am not a
computer maven, and just cannot understand why all the bad publicity. I
commend all who were a part of it and truly believes it puts Plink to shame
as well as AOL which I will soon be leaving. To those who have had problems,
persist, it will be well worth it.

I just got an Envoy 100 and am wondering which service is better. I have
not yet activated the ARDIS contract so I have flexibility in which I
choose. I would like to enjoy internet email, stock qoute & portfolio
summary, and news. Online banking would be great to.

Sincerly,

Alan

Do you know where I can get cheap Magic Link PIC-1000 software,
especially Scribe and Magic Xchange? Thanks.
