   Scott,

Magic Cap 1.5 is available for the PIC-2000 only, not the PIC-1000.
The latest version of the software for the 1000 is 1.0f; you can see the
version number your device currently has by tapping the circled question
mark in the upper-left hand corner of the screen while at the desk
scene. You can obtain the 'f' patch by calling (800) 55-MAGIC and
requesting it from Sony.

As a PIC-1000 user, you can also give your device most of the same
features that Magic Cap 1.5 has by installing some of the freeware
available, such as Onno's Tools, Steve's Mail Tools, Alarmed Again, etc.
which are available for download at http://www.spies.com/MagicCap for
installation by various means. You can also upgrade your device to
remove all references to PersonaLink by downloading the patch known as
Bastille, available at our web site: http://www.genmagic.com.

Hope you enjoy your new device! :)

Thanks for the advice!

I just found out one dissapointing aspect of my Magic Link and I guess it
only affects me here in Hawaii. I tried to use AOL's service but it cant
find a local access number. I KNOW we have local access to AOL so I
called them. Sure enough we did! But guess what? My Magic Link doesnt
access calls going through AOLNet, which is what Hawaii uses to get Toll
Free Access. *sigh* So neither personal link nor aol works with my
"communicator"*grin* I seem to be only talking to myself for now!

I placed my order with General Magic for Presto Links and Mail today.
Hopefully it will come soon so I can hook up with my local ISP and start
sending mail. I didnt know other places sold the Presto mail and just
bought it straight from GenMagic! *sigh* I could have saved a few bucks
if I had just ordered it from Mac Zone!

Does anyone know how to get AOL working? Anyone know how to get rid of
the AOL building for us Hawaii people!? tee hee!

BTW I just converted three other people to Magic Link today. Mac Zone is
having a factory refurbished Blowout of the PIC 1000 for a mere $199.95

I have tried every PDA from Newton to Psion to Zaurus and nothing is as
fun or as fast as my Magic Link!

aloha!

It can't be used. MagicCap only supports dram. You have a flash ram
card.

AOL in Hawaii is a lost cause- just ask Joe Solem, another resident of the
50th state that came to the same unhappy realization. To get rid of all
references to AOL, just go to the storeroom, tap the AOL package, and select
Pack Up from the vertical toolbar on the right side of the screen. After you
get Presto!Mail and Presto!Links working, you will not feel deprived of
anything, and the web browser doesn't work through AOL anyway, I believe.
While you are waiting for your software, set about acquiring an SRAM card.
1meg will do, but 2 is preferable. You will need a card to run the Presto!
products on the PIC1000. It's a good little machine, but it has inadequate
internal memory for these large applications.
Hopefully, the next MC communicator will have at least 2megs of onboard RAM,
and the Presto!Mail and !Links products in ROM.
GM is also reportedly dabbling in cooking up AOL client software; maybe they
will introduce an add on package for Presto!-AOL access, or a reengineered AOL
client that will allow access via AOLNet. Stay tuned.

Go to the storeroom and pack up the AOL package. This should remove the AOL
building.

Sorry, but the Magiccap devices do not presently support Flash ram,
therefore your Newton 2Meg card will not function on you Link or Envoy....
The 1Meg Newton card works fine as it is an SRAM card....

Again, sorry, but Personalink closed their doors forever just a few days ago,
after they decided they could not profitably compete with Internet Service
Providers. You do have several options though for email software, PrestoMail
for Internet mail connections and Web browsing, Mail on the Run for connection
to an MHS based system, and Quick Mail to connect to Quick mail based systems.
You will need a memory card that is compatible (remember to loook for SRAM
cards :-)

Hi Magicappers,

Could someone please post the address at SPIES for software that can be
downloaded directly to my communicator.

I have the address for regular access, http://www.spies.com/Magiccap but there
aren't any .cap packages there and there isn't a link to the other stuff.

Thanks for any help.

  Scott,

Several people have been talking about SRAM cards from a mail order
company called Reboot Electronics. A poster just a day or so ago was
kind enough to repost the contact information for this company. It is
as follows:

Reboot Electronics
PO Box 1065
Maywood, NJ 07607

201-457-1980

Please be aware that while it seems many people have bought and used
2MB cards (rather cheaply too) from this outfit, Sony does not support
or suggest SRAM cards other than the ones they sell for their Magic Link
products, and I've actually heard of one person having trouble
formatting a card obtained from this vendor, so proceed with this in
mind.

Sony guarantees only their own 1meg card in the MLs. They also sanction the
use of the Epson 2meg SRAM card. You rarely find this item in a shop, but
Epson products can be ordered almost anywhere. If you cannot find a cheap 2meg
card or do not care to take chances, then find a Computer City or other comp
superstore and order one. Telling which brands of SRAM do/do not work is
often hit or miss. Besides the two mentioned above, I know that Verbatim and
the old GRiD cards work. The GRiDs were rebadged Fuji cards (yes, the FujiFilm
people: Fuji Electrochemical Company, Ltd.) I am currently using both. There
was a list circulating a while back; would anyone care to repost? It seems
once again timely.

Be careful with this one. I went into the scene
and
accidentally ran my stylus across the box and
wound up
dragging the text info. When I did this and
dragged it up
across the edge of the box I heard the infamous
"Beep" and
my communicator went into a long cleanup. When
it started
back up I reentered the scene and the text was
not in the
right place and the song stamp was visible. I
dragged the
text down out of the way then dragged the stamp
out of the
box. Then I re-centered the text and dropped the
stamp.

If anyone from Active Paper or General Magic is
listening
you should look into making these things
unmoveable.

Gee, a bug in an Easter Egg. Usually I get Jelly

There are three major electronic retailers that sell MagicLinks/Accessories
and one retail/mailorder. The three retailers are:
   Incredible Universe
  SoundTrack
  Office Depot

the retail/mailorder is:
  ElecTek

I have also purchased an Epson 2M SRAM card from CompUSA for less than
200.00 including tax. Incredible universe is real good at getting supplies
since they cary PIC-x000 and Envoys. But the store that is usually
fantastic about carring MLs, is SoundTrack. Here in CO, the company limits
them to one per store. They usually have to call arround to find which
store has them at that time you are looking to buy since they do not last
long. Also, if they do not have what you want, they seem VERY willing to
get it for you.
