Where can I get the 2 or 4 meg expansion cards for my PIC-1000? The 4-megger
is preferred, since I have only the one PCMCIA slot.

Thanks!

I am not sure if you really want a "4-megger". The larger the card the
more main memory it takes. I know this sounds crazy but its true. The
largest card that probably should be used on a PIC-1000 is a 2MB. I use
one and the difference from the 1MB and 2MB is about 40k of main memory.
They explained to me where all that memory goes once, but I forgot. It
made sense and the only thing I really had to remember was... Don't use a
4MB card, it takes up too much memory. After pushing my PIC too hard once
and dealing with the crash, I learned. If it wasn't for Greg McKinzie and
his crack staff, my data would still be locked up on my card. Having been
through memory problems, I can guarantee you that you do not want to be
there.

Another point is this, The larger the card, the longer it takes to boot the
machine. And if you switch cards, the larger card will take forever. I
usually run right now with my pager card in the slot, a 2MB holding the
Presto!Whatever, InkWriter, you know... basic writting stuff, etc and
common used utilities, lastly my 1MB holds backup data and lesser used
utilities. This works ok for me, but when I switch modes from the pager to
the main 2MB card it takes a outragious amount of time to load. Lesser so
with the 1MB card. So, to load a 4MB card on a PIC-1000 may redefine
patients.

Just some thoughts

Thanks for the kind words, Kevin.

For those interested, I thought I'd do a quick review of the memory
management issues Kevin is referring to above. Memory is divided into
permanent & transient (workspace) memory. Workspace memory is limited to
275K. Each package on your communicator has a certain workspace memory
overhead. Certain operations, such as inserting a PC Card or unpacking a
package may cause package changes stored on the PC card to be shadowed
temporarily into workspace. Generally speaking, the more packages you have
on your PC card, the more likely you are to run out of workspace memory.
Similarly, keeping too many old objects in packages (i.e. too much old mail
in 'new items') can also eat up workspace memory. There is a thermometer
at the far right of the store room which lets you monitor your workspace
usage.

While 4mb cards do work on communicators, I personally don't recommend them
because they encourage people to store too many packages which can create
memory problems. I recommend you just store packages that you use
regularly and that you backup old mail & infrequently used packages onto
your PC with Magic Xchange. I find that I can get by fine with a 2mb card.

Magic Cap was originally designed to hide the details of memory management
from users. In most cases you don't need to know these details. However,
when you start pushing the envelope (i.e. by using larger PC Cards) then a
better understanding of how memory is used is very helpful to working
effectively within the limits of the machine.

-Paul

  Scott,

The Magic Cap operating system accepts SRAM type PC Cards only, due to
the memory structure within Magic Cap, and some issues with how Flash
RAM works.

  Scott,

PersonaLink was discontinued as of the end of August. In its place,
support for Magic communication via a standard PPP internet service
provider has been developed in the form of Presto!Mail and Presto!Links
(graphical web browser!), available at (888) CONJURE for your Magic Cap
device. You will need an SRAM card with at least 500K free for both of
these packages.
