Our very own Mark Perreira will be demonstrating his homemade cable that allows the Magic Port to be connected to either a Ricochet wireless modem or an external landline standard modem (both situations also require the Sony Wireless software for $49). The modified Magic Exchange cable can also then be used once again as a standard Magic Exchange cable. (This is surely a major accomplishment as both General Magic and Ricochet have been unable to procure/fabricate/kludge such a cable for the last 3+ months!) By the end of the meeting we hope to have some preliminary thruput comparisons of the Ricochet, Internal 14.4, external 14.4 and 28.8 external modems. Once again the meeting will be at 7:00 PM this Thursday at General Magic in Sunnyvale, CA. Re posting of this message is encouraged for AOL, Compuserve, newsgroups, BBS's, etc. Feel free. See you there! ///////Shawn Jipp Personal Email=sjipp@ix.netcom.com Work Email=apps@nanometrics.com Home=(408)736-5477

Stupid #1: This may be a stupid question but what does this new alarm clock software do? Why is it better than just setting my ML to alarm at a specific time in the morning via the calendar book/scheduler? I must be missing something here... Stupid question of the day#2: When I retrieve msgs from this mail list with my Magic Link using PrestoMail! I never see any 'Magic' enhanced stuff in the messages. Is this normal? Does no one include such things in their posts? Last question(not so stupid): Has anyone subscribed to Earthlink as their ISP? If so, how does it work with PrestoLinks? ///////Shawn Jipp Personal Email=sjipp@ix.netcom.com Work Email=apps@nanometrics.com Home=(408)736-5477

I work for a Fortune 500 company and network with other corporate ITs. The holdup on moving to Win95 is based on driver support from 3rd party vendors, not Win95 itself. Novell's 32 bit drivers are still in beta and WordPerfect, the standard in many companies, just came out with their Win95 version in June. We also have some mainframe apps and specialized printers that still don't have Win95 drivers. Most corporations are going to move to Win95 because of better memory management and a more reliable OS. Note that this is based on our internal tests, not marketing or media hype. While it's not perfect by a long shot, it's good enough for business as evidenced by the number of workers that want to use it. We're also planning on moving to NT and realize that Win95 is an interim step that will get users used to the NT interface. Since it's an interim step, we're not writing many custom drivers and are waiting for vendors to supply the upgrades under their maintenance contracts. I think GM is very smart to concentrate their resources on Win95. They won't be hurt by the few whiners like you that are out of the mainstream and can't see the big picture. -- Mike Lombrozo San Clemente, CA

Check out http://www.tradingtech.com/~people/mphillips/magic.html for a nice screen shot and description of the TravelClock. Its a very clever package! It displays the time with nearly full-screen digits (you're supposed to plug it in and tell your link not to turn off when connected to power), and as you know has an alarm and more recently a snooze feature. Very slick indeed! Regards, Luke Derossi for General Magic, Inc.

Greetings from Las Vegas, 'Two weeks, now, into ownership of my new PIC-2000. I've read most of the FAQ's, visited all the web sites I could find, joined this list, poured over my manual, looked at the help files, signed on with AOL, shared your frustration with the loss of AT&T, and still I'm without answers on a couple of things. What the heck are coupons? Is there a synonymous word in the world of DOS or Windows that would help explain, or could someone please tell me what they are and what they do? Also, would appreciate a word from the wealth of your experience as to what most of you are going to as an internet link (other than AOL) to replace AT&T, that is proving to be reliable and friendly. Finally, now that AT&T is vamoose, is there a way to clear it out of memory and make more space....get it off Downtown? Dear MAGICCAP List, Several requests: Would someone please send a copy of Tinker Tool to me at either A5833644656@attpls.net or, on AOL, Sprattling? Where is the best (read: least expensive) place to get MagicXchange and a Magic Link cable? Anyone have a pin-out for the Magic Port they can share with me? Thank you very much. Rod

I tried Earthlink for a month but I saw over an 80% call failure rate. This was with a pic and win95. When I did get connected everything worked great. I have Earthlink and am usually able to connect off-hours to both ppp and smtp without any problems. Our node here gets alot of use, so during busy times I occasionally see errors and seem to be the first to get kicked off. Still it was better than Netcom. Other than that, no problems...
