Subject: Presto & Sprynet
Hi All, Recently I got my copy of Presto!Mail and signed up with Sprynet, which is the ISP division for CompuServe, as I understand it. My main reason for signing up was to have all the local access numbers worldwide. The price was right, too, at $4.95 a month for 3 hours. But I'm having a problem connecting and was wondering if anybody out there has been successful. Using the Sprynet script from the Presto! manual, I'm getting a "PPP Authentication Failure". The error message goes on to say check UserID and Password, but I know these are correct, since I can connect using the Sprynet client for Windows from my desktop. I've tried calling the GM support line (800 55-MAGIC), and for the first time in over a year of owning my ML, got really poor service. The fellow was largely uninformed about the Presto! products. So I sent an email message to the "prestosupport" email address two weeks ago. No response, not even an acknowledgement, so I've tried again. At any rate, if anyb! ody can help, I would be most appr eciative. Sincerely, Jeff Jacobson jeff_jacobson@usa.net P.S. I've tryed contacting Sprynet but they say they are unfamilar with the Presto!Mail product can't be of any more help.

Battery technology has been improving about 10-20% per year, that's what you see with the NP500->NP520->NP530 all being compatible. The phenomenon isn't limited to Sony. > My message is this; Don't try to sell me an $800-$1000 communicator with a > NiCad battery pack. Lithium Ion batteries are not yet an industry standard in > cell phones There are a number of issues with Li-Ion batteries in cell phones, primary among them safety. The battery is large (but light), and it requires special protection, the contents will burn if exposed to air. When you hear about exploding or smoking portable equipment, it's generally a Li-Ion battery problem. Cell phones also must operate in a much wider temperature range and shock environment than PIC's, which are basically computers. Try putting your PIC in the freezer, the Li-Ion battery will not function. The display will have trouble too. But you want to use your cellphone in the winter, yes? Tom Talpey tmt@hsl.meitca.com

Subject: Presto!Mail
I've noticed that my incoming mail thru Presto!Mail has that formatting problem that was remedied in MC 1.5 for Plink messages. I have the rule set to improve the readability of incoming internet messages, but it only seems to work on messages arriving via Plink. Any way to correct this? Also, one of my wishes for a future enhancement of Presto!Mail is to use the same MC 1.5 Plink message report feature - the one that allows you to collect AND discard messages in one fell swoop. Presto!Mail uses the MC 1.0 version, which is not as nice. Finally, I'm still having problems collecting all of my e-mail and staying connected when using Netcom in conjunction with Presto!Mail/Presto!Links (getting "communication has stopped" messages in P-Mail, and "the modem has unexpectedly hung up" messages in P-Links). Is anybody else having difficulties?

Subject: Magic Cap for Windows 2.0 beta 1
Ok folks, we're now in the beginning phases of the Magic Cap for Windows = 2.0 beta 1 test. With this release, you'll be among the first to see = some of the new changes and improvements which we've made to Magic Cap = for Windows for the upcoming commerical release. This version now = supports Microsoft Exchange's Mapi Fax and Internet Mail drivers. If you're interested, download it at the addresses mentioned later in = this message. We're going to limit this release to 100 downloads, so get = yours today! You MUST be running the following to run this version of MCW: Windows '95 486dx-33 or higher 8 Megs or RAM In addition, to use the MAPI mail functions, you must have Microsoft = Exchange as well as the Microsoft MAPI Internet Mail driver (available = as a download from ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Softlib/MSLFILES/inetmail.exe = ) installed and running on your PC. You will NOT be able to use the same data files from the pre-release = version of Magic Cap for Windows. If you attempt to load one, you will = receive the error: cannot load xxxx.mcw because it is from a different = version of Magic Cap. This does nothing bad to either MCW or the data = file, you simply cannot load it. Downloading: To download the software, ftp to ftp.genmagic.com (login using anonymous = as the name and your email address as the password), and change into the = pub/mcw directory. In that directory is the file mcw8_6.exe.If you are = using a web browser, you can type in the URL = ftp://ftp.genmagic.com/pub/mcw and then download the file from there as = well. Download that file and double click on it to cause it to self extract = the contents. It will create a directory called c:\mcw8_6 and will put = all of its files there.=20 If you were previously running Magic Cap for Windows, delete the mcw.ini = file from your Windows root directory (usually c:\windows). In the c:\mcw8_6 directory is a file called mcw.exe. Double click on it = to start up MCW.=20 Once the program has started, to install the mapi mail package to allow = for mail and faxing to be used, select the Install Package from the File = menu and select the mapimail.pkg file from the c:\mcw8_6 directory. MCW = will use the MAPI Exchange profile which is your normal default profile. = In this version of MCW, you are never given the "choose which option you = wish to use" option. The default profile is automatically chosen. To = select a different profile as the default, go into the Windows '95 = Control Panels, and select Mail and Fax to chance your default settings. Caviats (aka, buttons not to press) - Do not attempt to use AT&T PersonaLink in this version of MCW. It is = in the process of being removed from MCW and its components may not be = stable. - We've only tried MCW with faxing and the Internet Mail driver from = Microsoft. We haven't tried it with the Compuserve, MSN, Netscape Mail, = cc:Mail, or any of the other mapi drivers available for exchange. If you = try using it with any of those drivers, I'd love to hear about any = experiences you may have (good or bad). Once you've downloaded the software, please e-mail me at = mcwbeta@genmagic.com to confirm that you were able to download it, and = that way I'll be able to email you with updates as they become available = to further enhance Magic Cap for Windows capabilities.
