Subject: my 2000 cents worth

I must say up front that I have always been the opinionated type that has never been scared to express my opinions or beliefs. I also don't believe in
always being politically correct. So here goes:

I am amazed at how negative some people are on this list. Although both Sony
and General Magic are in no way perfect companies, they deserve our support if
we wish them to improve their products. I believe U.S. Robotics, Apple, and
Microsoft have their problems too (especially that last one that I
mentioned!). IMHO, prophesying doom and gloom for MCW or GM is not a very
positive (or even nice) thing to do.
If you really feel that negative, then please just sell your Magic Links or
Envoys (of course at a very low price to the rest of us!) and remove yourself
from this list. Go buy another PDA or laptop or notebook. When you grow
tired of that device and find that it too is not perfect, then please don't
make the same mistake of wasting people's time by complaining and whining.
I'm serious. Thanks.
=========================
I forgot to mention in my earlier meeting notes that General Magic will allow
us to put up a web site for our club on their server. I think this was very
nice of them. They have been very supportive of our user group and I for one
appreciate it.

Now if only I had enough time to write a WEB page...

Can do. Is 7 minutes the time you want, or should it be something else?

> Two alarms?

Interesting. The problem, of course, is screen real estate. If I move
the setup into the magic lamp, that shouldn't be a probelm.

> A radio option? Just kidding of course...

I hear that there is a PCMCIA FM radio being developed. When it is available,
I will devote my full time and effort to writing a driver
for Magic Cap and incorporating it into TravelClock. I will quit my
job, leave my wife and kid, abandon my friends and work selflessly. 8^)

Thats not a bug! Thats a feature! OK, its a bug. I tried to limit the user
to non-midi sounds, but it didn't work. If you you the right and left arrows,
you only get 14 choices, but if you use the list, you get them all. I will
fix this also.

Interesting. I received similar feedback from people. The messages I send
indicate that a "file is attached," and the message recipients are trying
(usuccessfully) to convert the file. It would be nice to turn off the
graphics upon request so that the rest of the world would not get mad at
you....

Good point. However, the responsibility for support must move in both
directions. In order to create a line of compelling hand-held products and
supporting services that will improve the way America lives and works,
Sony, GM and the users will need to improve the dialogue flow. Sony and GM
should increase their frequency of communication with the users. If Sony
and GM choose not to do so, the users will always have the negative
feelings of distrust and abandonment. If the users give Sony and GM the
"impression" that unhappiness will exist regardless of what the
manufacturers do, then the life of this platform will take a turn for the
worse.

I believe the user community should play a more active role in the product
development process at Sony and GM (If that is not already happening).
This mailing list is a good start. I am sure that Sony/GM representatives
spend a good portion of their time reading the messages on this list, and I
hope that they don't write off the comments on this list as "more
complaints from the crybabies." After all, where there is frustration,
there is opportunity.

Well, Sony/GM has my vote for support. I only hope that they will spend
some time with people like me to find out what would make the ML a better
product...

Dear Martin and Magic,
You sir have uncovered the bug that it took GM three weeks to admit to! The
only work around is to set your fonts to default, and only send plain
postcards, otherwise it will send faulty attachments. BTW, if you are using
presto mail, and sending to annother ML using it, your personal name card, ALL
OF IT, will be sent to the other ML, and FILLED automaticall! I have a number
of personal pager mumbers now from individuals on this list. Be careful... :)

I'm beginning to use Presto!Mail 1.5.

When I'm sending email to Internet users they received my email as a =
uuencoded enclosure (with all the magic stuff like my address, phones =
etc...). Is this normal behavior for Presto!Mail? How can I send plain =
text (Internet mail)?

Thanks in advance!

Reminds me of the NeXTSTEP community story, which at least here in the
UK, strikes a harmonic with your words of "users will always have the
negative feelings of distrust and abandonment".

All so unecessary and counterproductive.

The Cisco story, however, is rather different with its strong history
of developer/community embrace.

But this offer of GM offering Web space to the MC community is a
good thing. I anyone here involved?

AMEN!

I am very pleased with my PIC2000 and Magic Cap - they're not perfect, but not
many things on this earth are (especially my PC at work which has been down
nearly a week!).

Subject: Ricochet Wireless Modems and ML..

Hi All!

Has anyone out there actually already gotten a MagicLink connected to
a Ricochet wireless "modem"?

I'm waiting for delivery of the MagicLink Wireless Connect software
and the MagicLink to Ricochet cable to arrive (hopefully soon..)..

When I ordered the cable for the modem from Metricom (Ricochet folks)
it sounded like it was no big deal. When I went to pick it up, it was
out of stock (same day as when I ordered the cable and was told it
was there...) and that they didn't know when it would arrive.

After the slightly disconcerting BAMCUG note, I called Metricom and
was told (yesterday) that the cables had just arrived and were
undergoing final "testing." Should ship in a couple of days if all
goes well... Said there was a backlog of 25 or so orders to fill,
but that they had plenty of cables to fill all orders....

So, I'm now wondering if anyone has *already* connected and used the
two together - or is this something so new (I'm new with the Magic
Links, too) that I stumbled into the beginnings???

(In the meantime my notebook and Ricochet and I are having a blast!!)

Thanks!

PS I plan on using it with both my PIC-1000 and PIC-2000...

If you haven't heard already, Reboot Electronics in New Jersey got a
shipment of 2 MB Grid SRAM cards - brand new - and have been selling
them for $49.95 each! That's right - TWO MB.....

I ordered two early last week, had US Mailed them to me for $3.95,
and got them just before the weekend. We've used them for a few days
now, and ordered some more! They are low in supplies, though...

Yeah, me too. I whine from time to time .....but it's usually about additional
features and/or enhancements that I would like to have. I haven't whined much
lately though- having a working web browser and Presto!Mail on my PIC1000 is
profoundly satisfying. Hell, I can even use it as a travel clock. I will
definitely get some use out of that. As for wanting more, I am saving my
pennies for the killer MC communicator that I feel is just a few months away.
I wonder if it will be the rumored Mitsubishi, or if another one will beat
that one to market.

As an aside,I have one thing to say to the manufacturers of the next
generation of communicators- You will have to go a long way to beat these Sony
Lithium Ion batteries. My NP520 has lots of life after a recharge, and Sony
seems to periodically come out with a new model with even more capacity which
so far have been backwards compatible. I am now spoiled. I usually only have
to recharge every couple of days with moderate to heavy use; in the forseeable
future that same recharge will probably last a week.
My message is this; Don't try to sell me an $800-$1000 communicator with a
NiCad battery pack. Lithium Ion batteries are not yet an industry standard in
cell phones, but since the majority of all MC communicators are, I believe,
Sony devices, these batteries have become the standard by which all that
follow will be judged. Please don't cripple a killer machine with lots of
memory and desirable apps by powering it with the outmoded NiCad battery.

Sony and GM should be commended. All in all they put out a fantastic product.
They should also be criticized. Few companies get ahead by hiring only
yes-men. If someone does not come out with a descending opinion, it is the
product that suffers.

> I believe U.S. Robotics, Apple, and Microsoft

> that I mentioned!).

I believe it is called Win95 or BOB part II. But they have it good compared
to Apple, who was the only MAJOR h/w vendor to decrease demand in the last
quarter (this weeks ComputerWorld). So yes, the big guys have problems. But
what does that contribute to this discussion. They are harshly criticized
too.

Now isn't this the definition of defeatist. You need as many people using
these as posible. The more people that use a MC unit, the more people will
write software for it. That leads to competition among vendors and more
stable software. This in turn leads to relative fewer complaints. Showing
intolerance to anyone not willing to kiss the feet of GM and Sony is surely
the fastest way to the platforms demise. Slightly faster than Sony's or GM's
shortsightedness. Sony's answer to an underpowered machine that could not be
upgraded, was a more powerful machine that can not be upgraded. Huh? GM's
failing to provide a PC hosted IDE so that it can tap into a huge number of
developers is nearly as silly. I have learned to ease off on my machine when
it starts exhibiting strange behavior. Though I still feel its the software
developers job to make sure his/her program does no damage, I should not have
pushed the machine as hard as I did. There is so much blame as to why this
platform has not taken off that hanging a modern day equivalent of "Irish need
not apply" is far more destructive as posting that you complain about. Lets
stop complaining about the complaints and find the cause of the complaints.
Then work to supply a solution. My posting the other day looking for someone
willing to do some custom programming for hire went unanswered. Obviously
there are not enough programmers willing and able to do MC programs. If I was
not already in love with my cap, knowing what I know now, I think I would have
ended up buying a Newton. There are enough developers there that I could have
had several bidders. This too will kill MC before the doom-sayers. So lets
stop all this foolishness and prove the doubters wrong.

I have Zoomers, Newtons, and an HP OmniGo 100. The Zoomer has great
battery life, but poor screen. The others suck batteries like
water...(We use the Renewals...)

I thought my PIC-2000 would suck the life out of the 520 battery I
got it with, but it just goes and goes (with backlighting on) --

I hope the companies out there listen to Wayne!! He's right!

I got the Ricochet working with the ML about a month ago and it has changed my
usage and outlook on this device. Having wireless flat rate connectivity is
the key to making an ML one of the most useful computing devices I have seen
in a long time.

On the subject of cables, I have developed a combination Ricochet wireless
modem, normal phone modem and PC Magic Xchange cable that is around 3ft long.
If there is interest in buying one from me or building your own, drop me a
line.

There are a few tricks about getting Presto to connect to the Metricom PPP
server that I had to work out as well. If anyone is having trouble and would
like some help, send me an email.

Mark.
