Thanks to everyone for all of the help.

I ended up pulling the batteries and restoring from a desktop backup.
Sony asked if the message that caused the crash was from Farcast. It was
not a Farcast meassge, in fact it was a message from one the regular
posters. In the past, the ML has run out of memory while collecting
Farcast messages and would start a clean up, but never a total lockup /
shutdown.
I try to monitor / manage the memory closely (daily).

On restoring:

After I had restored the ML, I re-restored the name card and datebook
file from more recent backups. I ended up with 2 packages of each in the
Storeroom, one closed and one open. I trashed the contents of the closed
packages and moved the closed packages to the open packages. I had 2 of
some name cards and a lot of the cards the ended in "(2)". Anyone care to
expand on what I did or didnt do and why the cards ended in (2)'s ?

The reason for the "(2)" is as follows. When you opened one of the
packages with your backed up namecards in it, you created duplicates, and
the new cards were added to the Name cards with teh "(2)" appended. Then,
when you destroyed the old packages, the original cards (without the
"(2)") were removed.

This can be remedied (one card at a time - ugh!) by tapping the 'change'
button in the Name cards scene, tapping on name, and OK (without changing
anything). There is no way in Magic Cap (at least I don't believe there
is) to cause the name card stack to be "sanitized" - you have to do it
manuyally. A deep cleanup might do the trick - I'm not sure. This might
be a nice little programming exercise for a new Magic Cap developer to
undertake.

Is that MSMail I detect? If so, how did you attach to the enterprise
mail system. I know that MCW is being written to MAPI standards, but
was unaware that ML could support them direct.

Subject: Software

Hi all,
Now that my link is somewhat stable again, I would like to see if
certain programs/utilities exist. Before the end of the year, I do
plan on upgrading to either a MC 1.5 or 2.0 (if one exist soon)
communicator by the end of the year. Therefore, if these abilities
already exist in 1.5 please let me know. The items I would want are:

1) When reading an email message, I need to quite often create a
datebook entry. A to do or meeting perhaps. Then attach the email as
note. Maybe a magic lamp command?

2) I would love to have a way to tie together all entries from all
programs that are related. For example, as many of you know, one of my
clients is Colorado Div ofWildlife. I have cards for peopleall over
CDOW, I could easily create a group in the Rolodex and tie them
together. However, this capabilities does not extend to datebook,
phone logs, notebook entries, etc. I was thinking, if only I had a way
of defining a project, asign it a stamp, then just tag everything with
that stamp. Then when I need to bill the state, I have all my info in
one place.

3) A time tracking app. Tons of these exist for the desktop. But, for
those of us who spend much time at the client site, I find using them a
chore. If I could put it on my SML that would actully be convient.

4) In that same line of thought, a milage tracker. One that can be
tied to client for billing.

I figure if I can tie together all the information, I can then upload
it to a workstation once a week. Then run my billing systems from
there.

Do these programs exist? If not, what would people charge to write
such a program. With the exception of the project manager, items 1
and 2 are just combining existing resources.

TIA

Apparently, my first post did not arrive. I wish I knew why that happens; it's
damn irritating. I'll try again.

We've created a new version of Presto!Links which is now compatible with ISPs
that use CHAP, such as AT&T Worldnet. Please call 1-888-conjure to get it.
Also, there is information posted on our web site.

BTW, our web site is undergoing some significant renovation and improvement,
so please bear with us. Hopefully, you will get quicker loading screens and
easier to find information as a result. Also, since we now have a dedicated
webmeister, the information will stay fresher. \Steve

I would make that "I wish I could write code that did a poor job of duplicating what my
competitors have been doing for years, and had snake oil marketeers that could persuade
millions of people to buy it."

I think the customers are actually asking for more fixes, drivers and support.

Ah yes. The Baron's coding slaves aren't all that, but the boys in
marketing are top notch. Before the year is out they will have the
general public clamboring for Explorer and at the same time attempt to
brainwash these same people into thinking that Netscape Navigator is a
virus riddled freeware package. At this very moment they are probably
working on a way to keep Navigator from working on Microsoft Network(if
they haven't already). I am glad that AOL is now pushing IExplorer- I
can now conveniently boycott them both with a single command>DEL
C:\AOL25\*.*<.

The modem connection is almost always ok - we do have occasional problems
with busy lines and timeouts, but I do on my Mac as well, so this is probably
unrelated.

This is it. Either the PPP negotiation falls over and I get "There was a
communications problem ..." or sometimes I get "mail.best.com has no DNS
entry" which is patently false ;-). I'll have to talk to my ISP in person but
they don't seem too amenable ... here's the latest response:

----
Unfortunately, this is simply a problem with the overhead involved in doing
a PPP connection. PPP pushes so much information over the line simply to
keep the connection active that 2400 baud is not fast enough to handle it.
Dialling in to a slower POP would unfortunately make no difference.

I find this hard to believe ... Not fast enough to handle it ? Maybe their
timeouts are a bit on the low side ...

No login script - just straight PPP.

Any suggestions for a reliable ISP in the Bay area that will route mail to
my domain (FrogAndRosbif.org) and not charge an arm and a leg ? If Ricochet
did this I'd consider setting up with them - but I don't really want to spend
any extra cash on getting this stuff to work unless it's reasonably
guaranteed to work ...

There is one out there. Its shareware available at one of the Magic
Cap download sites. I did a quick check of spies but I didn't see it
there. You know it when you see it because the icon is supposed to be
a railroad track, except the artist put the railroad ties on top of
the rails. (At least thats how it looks to me.)

The program will track anything because it just associates numbers
with a day, so you can use it for milage, hours, whatever.

I'm sorry I can't remember its name.

Kevin,

Glad to hear that you are up and running again. We had not heard about
the resolution of your problem. Did you recover the data on your SRAM
card? (If not then please contact us. We may be able to help.) How
did you restore your system? Did you determine the precise cause of
the problem?

We have held meetings to discuss your crash and some possible solutions
and strategies for improving our software. We will need more details,
however, to make a useful entry into the Farcast bug database. If
Farcast was, in fact, the cause of the problem then we are very
interested in learning more about it. It is by hearing about user's
problems that we can make improvements in our products.

I can be reached at (408) 642-6408 or at this email address. We are
currently making some changes to the Farcast package which will make it
even more robust in dealing with limited memory situations. Your input
would be very helpful.

You could also use PenCell which is a generic spreadsheet. Its
has some nice features and pretty easy to do custom forms.
It also has the feature that it will generate Excel compatible output
files (real .xls not just comma delimited data). It has several useful
sample forms built-in (like Expense Form). It will print, fax, email
etc.
sheets around.

Ahh... You fail to see the master plan. The idea is to make Microsoft
products so pervasive Microsoft is considered to have a monopoly. Then
the government will step in, break them up, prevent them from
effectively competing. Once General Magic dispells the dark shadow of
Microsoft, the Sun will shine letting the Apples grow all over the

Yes, mine is QUITE valid. They (General Magic) were able to duplicate the
problem I have on my PIC1000 (1 meg Sony SRAM card) with the Presto
package. They said they'd get back to me when they had a "fix" but
haven't heard from them again.
You may have better luck running it on a 2000.

Magic Cap for Windows is using the Microsoft Internet MAPI drivers. These
drivers allow us to create a fully functional ISP client built into the
Magic Cap for Windows program.

At this time we are not creating a Web browser for MCW. There are plenty of
Web Browsers available for Windows, our goal is to create a Personal
Internet Communicator, not a Web browser.

Thanks for the input.

Does anyone know where to get a copy of the book "Magic Cap Complete" at
a reasonable price?

The software package outfitters direct will let you purchase that book
along with two others. I can't vouch for reasonable price though.

Has anyone purchased from outfitters direct? I am curious how it went and
what you thought.

In the "Magic Web Sites" section of our web site there is a link to Addison
Wesley Developer Press (http://www.aw.com/devpress/titles/48948.html) that
contains ordering information. We also have links to information on other
Magic Cap books.

Or you can order it on the web via Cbooks
(http://www.aw.com/devpress/titles/48948.html) a web site for ordering
technical books run by ex-General Magic evangelists Chris MacAskill and Kim
Orumchian. They offer a 10% for on MC Complete.

Supposedly, it's a package that helps making decks for the game Magic the
Gathering. I'm not sure what that means, though.

Lee,

Even the CHAP fix won't work with NT RAS, due to MicroSoft's non-standard
CHAP implementation (FYI, they use MD4 as the encryption algorithm, not MD5
as per the RFC). To use the Presto stuff with RAS, you have to enable
cleartext passwords, which drops down to PAP.

Actually, mine did the same thing at about the same time. Maybe a corrupted message on
the list? Couldn't get it to restart for anything, tried all the usual tricks. Finally
had to pull the batteries, and that did the trick. Fortunately, had a recent backup...
