Subject: Canada AOL access

Dear Magic Cappers,

According to a well-connected correspondant, AOL stopped using it's Magic
Link friendly SprintNet access number in at least one Canadian city
recently. They replaced it with a number incompatible with Magic Links,
just as they did overseas, and then here in Hawaii. Is this starting to
look like a trend? I wonder how long those of you in the "contiguous 48
states" will be able to connect to AOL? Maybe you should write AOL and ask.

Joe Solem

P.S. My friend suggests using Presto!Mail/Links. Me? Still waiting for
that coupon in the mail.

Subject: Fatal Crash

Dear Magic,

My PIC 2000 seems to have suffered some sort of fatal crash last night
while collecting mail w/ Presto 1.5. The 2000 was collecting the 1st
message (after several earlier previous collections). The status bar
showed the message transfer as complete and it appeared to be just before
starting the next message. Only thing is, the next message never started
because the ML locked up. It took several times of switching it off
before it finally did switch off. It will not restart. This is the first
time this has happened and I have been using Presto 1.5 and Farcast 1.0
without a hitch for about a month now. I have not pulled the batteries
yet. I do have recent backups in case they will be needed. Anyone else
had this problem and any suggestion on where to start?

Thanks,
George Skinner

I believe GM had to fix a bug in Presto!Mail and Presto!Links so it will
work with WorldNet. Hopefully we will hear something about obtaining the
new versions on the mailing lists soon.

When this has happened to me, I have tried using the hard reset button. It
is hidden in the bottom of the communicator and requires a paper clip. It
is near one of the commnicators rubber pads if I recall properly. If that
doesn't work you should remove your pc card and batteries and cold boot the
device. Hopefully you have a backup of main memory which you can use to
restore from. And hopefully your pc card isn't damaged. Try calling Sony
Support for help but don't admit to having a non-sony pc sram card. Good
luck.

Subject: love !Links+!Mail

Having used Presto!Mail and Presto!Links intensively for the last day
and a 1\2, I have these things to say about them. I am satisfied with
them. They work as advertized, and !Links is not as slow as some think
it to be. (Try getting a web page through AOL with the webcrawler
engine some time- you get so sick of CANNOT CONNECT DUE TO SYSTEM
TRAFFIC messages that a first time retrieval at any speed is
refreshing! and !Links is about the same speed anyway.)
I thought that I would miss the neat little telescript service features
that PLink had, and I don't. All of the day to day features that make
the ML useful as an e-mail machine are present or at least replaced
with something of equal or greater utility. (The only thing that I will
truly mourn is the directory lookup) My favorite feature so far is the
mailbox summary. It surpasses the PLink summary in that the buttons do
not disappear after you choose messages and touch a button. As soon as
you touch a button, you are then free to reuse the summary by
deselecting your previous checkoffs and checking the items that were
unchecked in the last operation-ie.-get summary, check off messages and
delete them, then deselect the previous checks and check messages to
collect and hit the collect button. To do this you had to get 2
separate summaries from PLink.

Hi, I just bought a PIC-2000 but still have my 1000... is there any type of
upgrades or patches to the OS that I can apply... Like 1.5 or any bug
fixxes... ALSO, I've been seing alot of people having problems with Presto
LINKS and MAIl and was woundering if those are valid,,, one of the biggest
reasons that I bought the PIC's is that they can do Internet and E-mail,
WIRED or WIRELESS!!,, any PDA can keep numbers and scheduals but the Magic
Cap machines RULE!!!

One of the major improvements in Magic Cap 1.5 and PersonaLink was the mail
summarization feature. The inbox scene had a new button called
"report". This took you to a scene which itemized all the mail in your
personalink mailbox. You could update the report or delete, receive,
forward or ignore individual messages. Each time you performed any action
the report would be updated automatically so you could do further actions
if any.

George,

Here are a few suggestions:

(1) You might try a system reset by putting a pin or paperclip in the lower
right hole on the back of the machine. This should not effect the data in
your machine. It is a good idea to regularly clean up memory on the
PIC-2000 by turning on the communicator with the option key depressed.

(2) Go into the store room and look at the workspace thermometer on the
right side of the room. Is it at least 20% free?

(3) In the storage room, touch magic lamp, option-tap suggestions for
discarding. This forces a tidy up of memory.

If you suspect that Farcast is related to the problem, please contact Toby
Dunn and he will look into it with you.

Subject: PPP, ISPs and PIC-1000

Hi all,

When I asked my ISP about the problems I had with respect to connecting to
them using my Magic Link and Presto!Mail. Basically it works fine some of the
time, (say 20%), but just fails to connect, or drops the connection part way
through, the rest of the time.

I got the following response:

----
> One last question: I have recently obtained some Internet access software
> for my Sony Magic Link PDA. I have been trying to connect with it, when I'm
> not at home and can use my Mac, and have been having a VERY low success rate

> Modem speed is 2400 baud.
If it is attempting to do a ppp link to us, 2400 baud is not fast enough.
You would need at least 9600 baud in order to be able to maintain a link.
Other than that, if it is a direct terminal dial in, you should be fine.
What type of modem are you using?
----

Now, it is totally lame of them to say 2400 baud is too slow, but has anyone
else had this sort of problem ? Perhaps a new improved more performant
Presto!Mail might squeeze a few more bits through to keep them happy ?

Anyway, since I have no coupons for Presto!Mail from AT&T (see previous moan
about cancelling my PLS subscription 2 days too early), I don't think I'll
bother buying a copy for my wife's PIC-1000 just yet ...

Is the problem establishing the modem connection (the squealing tones you
hear the modems exchanging) or after that? It could be the modems aren't
consistently configured to accept 2400 baud connections and the service
provider is telling you in a very odd way.

If the modem answers then maybe you are having a PPP negotiation
problem. This is harder to debug. You would need the help of the service
provider to turn on some sort of PPP debugging to trace your connection.

Do you use a PPP login script? You can add a debug statement to create a
notebook page of the script output. This is essential for script debugging.

You may need to find another service provider if they aren't willing to
support 2400 baud.

Hi all,

Ok, you got me. I was trying to explain one thing and am getting shown
up elsewhere. So please let me explain. You are all absolutely
correct about one field overwriting the other. GUILTY! I originally
wrote the program to display the second field as a variable string.
This made the user uncomfortable. So, I changed it. Easier to go
along to get along. Besides, the database RI was so strong it wouldn't
do any harm anyway. After she got upset that the program corrected
her, and I explained, I added the message you guys nailed me with.

The point I was trying to make was that plenty of checks and balances
were designed into the program. Therefore the data always stayed
completely in tact. Since data is the life blood of any computing
system, this was the only real choice.

As for my power recycles, that was done during testing to insure that
the transaction processing would adequately protect the data. Never
was the end users system crashed in this manner. I did not think this
needed explaining, but I guess I was wrong

Thanks for the info but that is the first thing that I checked, it is

Subject: Fatal Crash#2!

[This message may have contained graphics created by a Magic Cap device on
America Online.]

Dear MagicCap,
I just had a fatal crash this morning. I was inside my inbox when all of a
sudden I had the urge to press the fax button. So I opened my magic lamp and
pressed fax. Big Mistake. The screen for an instance showed me the normal fax
screen, but the item being faxed strangely showed an image of one of those
Image buttons in prestolinks( the one you tap on if you want to download an
image). Then, KABOOM! My magic link kept doing that restart beep every 2
seconds. I tried turning it off, but it didn't work. I tried resetting it, it
didn't work. I pulled main battery and put it back in, it didn't work. I
pulled cards out...didn't work. I took both batteries and card out. It
worked.

The only package I had unpacked was prestolinks/mail at occurance of event.
If somebody has prestolinks/mail, and has the nerve, go to the inbox tap
magic lamp and tap fax. I am sure not going to do that again. I don't have
magicxchange but luckily the night before I save my info on memory card!

Phew! After 2 years of heavy usage with tinker tool and all, this is my first
major crash.

I know I sent tinker tool to someone. Whoever that person was, can you please
send it back to me?

Aw come on, "Writing Solid Code" isn't worth anything unless the code
actually does something useful. Microsoft is successful because they write
programs that satisfy the customer's needs, not programs for other
programmers to critique. I wish I could write code that sold millions of
copies and had customers asking for more.

I applaud your response and second it. Too many times we forget that GM,
SNT and Sony are all doing the best they can and don't deliberately deliver
"bad" software. We have the choice to return the products if we can't live
with the limitations, or offer constructive feedback. If the vendor isn't
responsive to my feedback, I can always switch to another product.
Netmanage's handling of Ecco Pro is a good example of this.

GM and AP have been responsive and I'll stick with their products even
though they're far from perfect. The key, for me, is the benefits far
outweigh the hassles.

Kevin, given your recent posts I think you should return your magic link if
you still can or sell it. Magic Cap versions 1.0 and 1.5 have bugs. It is
new technology and the cycle time to introduce bug fixes is long (in some
cases infinite). If you can't live with the memory management issues we all
have learned to face or the particular drawbacks with the platform, you
should do something about it.

Sending comments about 'programming practices' isn't constructive. Blaming
Sony New Technologies and now Active Paper with no real evidence isn't
constructive. I can tell you that UUDecode was developed with much less
'programming practices' then SNT or AP used. I suggest you throw UUDecode
in the trash right now as you have more evidence now then you do on SNT or
AP.

Subject: "Bastille" patch now available on the web.

The Bastille patch, which removes PersonaLink references from your
Magic Cap communicator, is now available on General Magic's web server.

Please read this message from the Director of AT&T PersonaLink
Services before downloading the patch.

-----cut here-----
To All PersonaLink Customers,

As a result of our recent announcement to discontinue service,
customers have asked for the ability to remove references to "AT&T"
and "PersonaLink Services" that currently reside in the Magic Cap
Operating System. To accommodate these request, General Magic has
created a PersonaLink software patch called "Bastille". This patch
will hide all references to AT&T PersonaLink including logos, AT&T
Building and service features. The package size is 11K bytes and will
be installed into your RAM memory ( a portion of your device Main
Memory or Memory Card, depending on your device configuration).

NOTE: Removing the batteries from your communicator, and resetting
your device to its original state or restoring from backup prior to
this patch being installed, will remove this software patch causing
AT&T PersonaLink Services to "reappear".

Sincerely,

Tom Redmond

Director, AT&T PersonaLink Services

The patch is available at General Magic's
Website.

I was wondering if/when this'd happen. I'm not really surprised that ISPs
would be cutting out lower-speed users, but I'm surprised that it's
happening this early. My guess is that they're trying to stop slower-rate
users, because slow links tie up a valuable 28.8 (or 33.x) modem.

Right now, there's no solution except to get a pic-2k or another ISP. PMail
should be filling a 2400 baud pipe with no probem, so it's not like the
inactivity timer on the ISP is kicking in.

Dear Magic,
Is there any way for someone to send me the 1.0f upgrade? I lost it after
pulling my batteries.
