Subject: ML-2000 for Internet Use - Misc. Replies

Wayne Sanderson, Greg Satz and David Szego have given me some great
information and food for thought. I hope they won't mind if I gather
their material by subject before replying ...

On Magic Xchange:
-----------------

>MXChange is available for around $35.00US if you shop- I got mine at
>PCZone via telephone /mailorder.

Thanks for the tip!

>Magic XChange is a mediocre product for getting things to and from the
>ML... it's ok for to actually, but don't even bother getting things off
>the ML with it.

I guess the best way to get things off then would be to presto-mail
them off - yes? Do you somehow collect your backups into a package and
then uuencode it and squirt it at your ISP?

>The only problem is, if you pirate the software,
>you still need the cable. Guess what the only way to get the cable is?
>That's right... Buy their damn software!

Surely the connector can't be that hard to rig ... it's talking to a PC
serial port, right? RS-232? But I should warn anyone who emails me
pirated software that it'll make me very very cross. Especially if you use
PGP to secure it first - oh, I just hate that :-)

On Terminal Emulation:
----------------------

>[ cujo doesn't do vt100 so ] Buy a commercial Emulation package.

Can you recommend one? Seems like there might not be a decent one?

>River Run is a pooch as far as performance goes... Trying to use an IRC
>or shell session or anything on my ISP is ridiculously slow... Surprising
>because I thought a 20MHz processor could support a simple 14.4
>connection when all it has to do is dump text to the screen and read the
>keyboard buffer.

This ain't encouraging. I mean, ML does all this cute animation
pollywaffle, but it still can't scroll characters? Perhaps RR have some
kind of update available ... or perhaps someone from GM can tell us
whether they have any plans to produce a presto!vt100 any time soon?

On Flash:
--------

>Flash disks would also be nice, but if it were easy to open up the
>platform to use them, I think it would already have been done. There
>must be some hitch in the way the OS uses add on memory or something. I
>haven't a clue.

Presuming that this is a hardware limitation, then I'd guess that it has
to do with the requirement that flash draw power from the port - sram has
its own battery and draws no power, but flash cards have no battery.

>Flash doesn't work on the available communicators as memory. I believe
>flash can work but so far no one has chosen to support it. It forces your
>communicator to use main memory for changes, however.

I'm not certain why this would be - once you're able to power and drive
the thing, flash should look like any other chunk of memory - the real
difference from a driver point of view is that flash is slower to write
because you have to erase it before you overwrite it.

>No. Flash is *not* supported at all. Never will be from what I've heard
>from GM. However, I can't see why you'd need more than a 16Mb SRAM
>card... Even that seems like total overkill! (so far, anyways!)

Yep - I never even filled up 2 meg with my zoomer. However, with
presto mail/links, I can see how you could use a good chunk of mass
storage.

On Java:
--------

>I think a Java VM would be a significant challenge due to resource
>limitations.

Well, you could say the same thing about Magic-Cap itself. I certainly
take your point, but the nice thing about a JVM is that all the source is
already available - so the job is really just going to be squeezing it.

On Miscellaneous:
-----------------

>I'm saving my pennies now for the next generation
>communicator, from whichever manufacturer comes forth with the best

The best time to buy any computer is always ... tomorrow ...

>Having enjoyed the
>use of a Telescript based communication service for some time now, an
>ISP will be a step down.

What features will you miss? I mean, if it's just mail filtering, you
can ask your ISP to help you get procmail set up on the server end ...

>And this is exactly what the Baron WANTS
>us all to think when we are considering technology investments and/or
>product purchases.

Yep. "Microstuffed? I'd sooner gargle rat turds."

>$2000+ for a communicator? For
>this price you can get a nice portable computer with quite a number of
>these features.

Tell me where I can get a pen-based note-pad (with usable HWR) and
with about the same weight, battery life & functionality and I'd certainly
think hard about it. The way I figure it, I'm already amassing a fair
pricetag ...

ML-2000 - $750
2 2meg SRAMS - $250 (or $100 if Rodent's recent usenet post pans out)
MX - $35
Magic Connection - $120
Presto Mail/Links - $50
Graffiti - $80

Total - about $1200 - $1300.

Now if I could pick up a lightweight pen-based note-pad that did much
the same thing, but with a pentium, some decent mass storage and a
colour screen ... but such a thing does not exist. Hardware manufacturers
just don't seem to understand what pens are for. And besides, I want
something I can hold in my hand ...

I'm going to go out on a limb here and state that I think color
support *isn't* in the Magic Cap 1.0 devices, and I doubt it's in the
1.5 devices. I'm not bored enough to go dig through the changelogs in
our source code, but I think color support wasn't official until the
Magic Cap for Windows product.

Any Magicians need to correct me?

A friend of mine (who has one of the top-selling Java books :-) claims
that the basic set of libraries/code you need to be "really Java"
takes up about 6MB for 680x0 machines. If we shrank the size of the
libraries (ditch the file IO, for example), it would be smaller, but
I'm guessing it'd have to be in the 2MB range to be worth it.

Remember that ROM space costs money in more ways than the chips
themselves -- PC board real estate and support hardware. Pretty soon
you're looking at a device that costs *way* more than any other
persona communicator.

exactly my point. At some price-point, people will go out and buy a
486/pentium subnotebook instead of a Magic Cap device. Keeping the
cost down means not having some features that those subnotebooks have
-- big gobs of memory, hard drives, that sort of thing.

With our new Tabriz product, one can access Telescript engines via the
WWW.

General Magic had a 1/4 page ad in the classifieds section of the local San
Jose Mercury News newspaper today (Sunday 7/21). They have 6 openings:

1) Director Of Product Marketing for the active Internet division.

2) Director, Magic Cap Communications Engineering. It mentions working with
"state-of-the-art handheld Internet communication software."

3) Security Systems Engineer. To "help resolve security threats in both
Tabriz and Magic Cap."

4) Web Development Engineer. This one is interesting. It describes the
position in that "You will drive Prestolinks (WWW Browser) forward on our next
generation Magic Cap OS." It goes on to mention creating "HTML table support
and integrating SSL libraries and commercial JPEG libraries."

5) Internet Protocol Engineer. "Create, design, and develop Internet applications for next-generation communication protocol software for Magic Cap,
General Magic's trademark operating system."

6) Tools Engineer. "Design, create, maintain, and support tools for
developing Tabriz applications."

Of course the job descriptions were longer but these were the primary job functions listed.

We will try to write about this next one in a timely manner and I think I have

There was supposed to be a terminal emulation package in the works from
Active Paper, but I have not heard about it for a while here. It was
probably pushed to the back burner so that Presto!Mail 1.5 and P!Links
could be finalized. Now that they are out hopefully the AP wizards will
soon crank out a super emulation package? As with anything else that AP
markets, it will be worth waiting for. As for customer demand, the line
to buy starts here.

For anything much over $2000.US, I would go shopping for a 486/Pentium
pen computer loaded with Windows for Pen Computing, which I would then
load MCW onto and take off. I might have to buy secondhand, but so
what. When the full commercial release of MCW hits the market a device
so equipped will be extremely versatile and a total blast to use.

So how about a quick two paragraph summary. It would be better then
nothing.

Yes, I think you're right - maybe one of the Epson 400s - they're about
2.5 pounds and get you maybe 10 hours battery life if you don't use any
backlighting ... I think that to load the thing up you're getting closer
to the 3k mark ... still, then you'd have a decent amount of freeware to
run, including netscape and all the java apps you could scrounge ...

This bears sleeping on. Anyone know when the real-live MCW is due?

Hi Kevin,

We are using the Internet mail drivers that Microsoft created. We are
addhearing to the standards created by this and included with in that
standard is the support for winsock.

What you will get is a fully functional email client that can access mail
via modem or direct conect. If you send mail to a nother MCW user or a PIC
user you will have all the rich text, graphics and animations you are
accoustomed to in the Plink service.

Hope this helps.

If I understand the way flash memory works, you can't just write to
it as you would RAM or SRAM. You need to commit 'blocks' at a time.
This alone brings up several problems. First the most obvious is you
have to schedule writes to the card. Packages can't just write a byte
or two whenever they want to. You need to 'collect' a bunch of writes
and write them to the card all at once. Second, to effectively use the
space on the card, you might need to read a partially-used block from
the card and merge your new data with it and write it back. Otherwise
you'd end up with x number of partially filled blocks, a good deal of
space wasted, and no way to re-write to the card once it fills up.

Other problems include the speed (or lack thereof) of flash memory.
Its much slower than SRAM. Also, Flash memory has a limited
write-lifespan. Which means you want to write to flash as efficiently
and as rarely as possible.

The memory model of Magic Cap was designed to take advantage of
SRAM's capabilities, which suffer none of the above limitations.
According to the specification of the PC Card slot, Magic Cap
communicators are physically able to support flash technology. However
as you can see the limitations imposed by flash technology makes it less
attractive. Especially when a 2MB SRAM card can support even heavy
usage, with Presto! products too.

This list has become very funny. We are all running around like

did this become our problem? The people who sold us these products have

Okay.

You will need magic xchange. Or someone has to mail it to you via america
online and personalink while it is still alive. Also someone could beam it
to you from another communicator. I believe the Presto! products
personalize themselves to protect against copy protection so ultimately
some of the above options may not work.

The UUDecode package will decode presto!mail messages. I haven't tested
this but someone could mail you a copy of the presto! products via the
internet and Presto!Mail and the recipient (without Presto!Mail) could
decode them with UUDecode and install them.

I agree with you that the bugs in Presto!Mail and Presto!Links are pretty
annoying. It would have been nice to get the product without any
bugs. However I think you are being a bit short sighted on the
PersonaLink/ISP transition. I don't believe a small company like GM has
much influence over a huge company like AT&T. My guess is if GM had their
way PersonaLink would still be supported instead of being terminated.

A proprietary mail system, even if it is easier to use, is going to have a
very hard time being successful in the marketplace. Have you tried calling
the 888-conjure number and pleading your case?

Moving to the internet makes the Magic Cap technology accessible. No one
can ignore the internet any longer, not even Microsoft. I am happy to see
PersonaLink evolve into something I believe will be a better solution
overall. Presto!Mail and Presto!Links with a plethora of internet service
providers will give you a better set of overall services at a better cost
then AT&T and GM could ever do by themselves.

I can understand why a company would introduce new software to market with
bugs. It happens all the time. However it is incumbent that said company
also provide updates in a very timely manner. Ultimately I will vote (with
my money) for the company that provides the best software and software
support (updates).

Yeah, I agree. GM devices have so much potential, but I
unfortunately have a short attention span. If I can nearly
painlessly continue to manage my email on my SML, cool. but if I
have to hassle with it, it'll just be replaced by an analog daytimer

I had it all set up juuuust right, and now... I'm very

hi,

well the only problem I've had is: that the new installer does not work
with the previous versions of metronub, so when you are about to install
you should remove the metronub. and just one other thing I havwe not

I wrote a Magic Cap package called ReplyReturn which will set the Reply-To
field of the mail header to be any address label on your name card. It also
contains a rule that will require you to set the 'about' field. It appears
to work with Presto!Mail 1.5. Drop me a note if you would like a

A used or overstock selloff from a warehouse type place would be what I
was referring to- probably an IBM 360PE, which is a notebook that has a
flippable touchscreen standard and could be used as a pen slate for
most MC things, and you can reclaim the keyboard for extensive typing.
A used or surplus/overstock 360PE could probably be had for less than
$2000., maybe alot less.

For those a little overwhelmed by all the ISP choices, don't forget that
America Online remains a viable alternative to PersonaLink. It may not be
the right solution for eveyone, but it is a simple alternative that is

The trouble there is battery life and weight - 4 hours and 7 pounds. I
agree that with MCW it'd be a very nice box to cart to work, but not
for a plane trip and not as a pda - I think it's just a different kind
of beast. For the moment I believe I'm plumping for the ML-2000 as mentioned;
it's not perfect, but it does more of what I want than anything else I've
found.

Which brings up another question ... I hear that presto tools are particular
about the facilities they need from an ISP. My ISP here is very friendly and
will install pretty much whatever I need ... so can someone give me a concise
summary of what one's ISP needs to have if the presto tools are going to work?

There should also be a way to request a list of all users

may want to try this because I know that my ISP
automatically adds the mailserver address to all my email

Scott,

You need to get the 1.0f update from Sony. If you are on
Plink I assume that through Aug 31 you can still get it that
way. Go to the Plink building and I believe you can tap on
the Forms and there should be one for getting updates. I
believe someone said it is on their web site too. besides
that you can call Sony and they should be able to send it to
you in MXchange format.

[ Explanation of the difficulties of driving a flash card - thanks! ]

One important thing you've missed here is that while flash is a lot
slower to write than sram, it's just as fast when you want to read it.
So I certainly agree that you wouldn't want to use flash as main memory
- much too slow for that. However, as mass-storage it has it all over
sram both in price and in capacity. Obvious uses on the ML-2000 are as a
mail and web-cache for presto - though writing flash is slow compared to
sram, it's like lightning compared to the throughput of the ML's
internal modem - and as a repository for executables and relatively
static databases (like the MC scenery?). It'd be a good spot to keep
multiple full backups too.

Hmm, so the hardware will do it. I think, then, if someone were to write
a driver for flash, a popular configuration would have SRAM in one slot
and flash in the other - web caches alone would well justify this.
