As with all things having to do with hardware, software and communications, it
depends. For short transfers with a lot of back-and-forth communication, a
faster modem is no help in this situation. For downloads of large objects,
e.g. graphics, it will help. You won't see true 28.8 speeds because the OS is
crunching, but you'll get quicker response than with a slower modem. \Steve

I too think a 28.8 modem would be nice. However, the response from my
previous suggestion indicated the OS was the limiting factor, not the
modem. Active Paper said that a faster modem wouldn't improve the speed of
Presto!Mail or Presto!Links. Any comments from Sony or General Magic?

I've got a package full of mostly new datebook stamps that I have
intended to share publicly, but I wanted to expand the selection a bit
more before posting it somewhere. Any ideas for mass-audience stamps
are welcome. I figure another half-dozen in the package would make it
worthy size; there's about 15 there now.

Subject: Re: SKYTEL CARD

Shhh....

Here's a workaround that not even Magic Cap support knows about. I've
confirmed it's functionality on several PIC-2000s, and the NeoNet...

- Plug the Pager into your 2000, so the packages install on your PIC.
- Pull out the batteries from your *pager*. (Not your Link, please!)
- After 30 seconds, replace the batteries, and insert the card into a
PIC-1000 (You may need to travel to your near-by Good Guys, Office Max, etc
for this one)
- After the pager card fires up, it should be working now (you get signal)
- Turn off power on the PIC-1000, remove card, reinsert it into the 2000 and
power up.

You'll now have a functioning pager card on the PIC-2000! (And they call this
Magic!)
Only trick is, you'll need to replace the batteries early before they run out
or else you'll need to go back to the Good Guys again!

Can you access the package from the building? Have you attempted to
pack and unpack the package to see if it re-establishes the link between
the icon and the service? How about deleting changes to the package
from the storeroom (of course, be warned that all customization and any
account info stored in the package will be lost)?

Give some of these a try and let me know what the results are.

not

Someone already corrected this, but for the record, we did not acquire Active
Paper, of course. We purchased the rights to Presto!Mail and Presto!Links
technology and then completed the products with the help of Magicians, Active
Paper, Allpen, and all you fine Beta testers. We're now busily working on an
upgrade based on suggestions from you (so send 'em in!). Active Paper is alive
and well in Austin, and I hope they create many more fine Magic Cap products
now that they have some pocket change...

As for AT&T, well, as you may guess, AT&T does not run their Press Releases by
us before sending them out :-) \Steve

 PARSIPPANY, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 11, 1996--AT&T today informed
AT&T PersonaLink(SM) Services customers that the service will be
discontinued on August 30, 1996. This action is a continuation of

Customers of Sony Magic Link and Motorola Envoy will still be able to
use the devices for mobile messaging through services currently bundled
in each device, such as America Online and/or RadioMail(R), or through
the use of third-party software. In addition, they will for the first
time be able to use these personal communicators to connect to Internet
electronic mailboxes and browse the World Wide Web using software from
Active Paper, Inc., which was recently acquired by General Magic.
AT&T said all the unit's employees will be reassigned to other parts
of the company.

  Richard,

To obtain the CompuServe Companion, you need to log onto CompuServe
from another computer initially to set up the account. You can
accomplish this by visiting http://www.compuserve.com and following the
instructions there. Once you are a member of CompuServe, use the GO
command to go to 'CS4MAGIC' where you can download the software.

Be warned that the package is fairly large; it requires approximately
500K, so an SRAM card will be required on your PIC-1000.

If you have a card, and it has this much space free, you can also use
Presto!Mail. With a bit more space you can also use Presto!Links, the
graphical web browser. They do in fact work great on a PIC-1000; I've
been very happy using them on my 1000. Of course, using either of these
will require an account with any internet service provider that offers
PPP. Also, if you can find a provider you like that offers (800)
dial-up access, you can continue to enjoy that capability.

Subject: no AOL local access

Magic Cappers:

As of July 1st, AOL has discontinued all SprintNet local access numbers
here in Honolulu, and their remaining AOLNet numbers do not support Magic
Links. Neither Sprint nor the PDA people at AOL have been able to suggest
any solution to this problem other than to suggest using an 800 toll
number or connecting via a California number. The guys at AOL have been
trying to help, but to no avail. With the imminent demise of PLink , it
looks like I'll be shopping around for a local ISP for my Magic Link. At
least ATT is offering Presto!Mail to it's soon-to-be former customers.

I'm curious, though, has AOL done this in any other part of the country,
or is it just Honolulu? One of the AOL PDA guys told me it was just
Honolulu, but I wonder if it is just continuing a trend that started when
AOL discontinued it's SprintNet numbers overseas and replaced them with
GlobalNet numbers which also do not support Magic Links. Maybe your town
is next? I wonder.

Anybody have any info on this?

Thanks in advance.

Once and for all, and I would appreciate an answer to this because a
purchase decision is riding on it- Have you actually used the Apex
modem in your Magic Link and accessed a land line connection with it?
Other posters to this list say it will not work because the software
does not support landline mode. I know the box says it is dual capable
and it comes with a landline cord, but have you actually tried it in a
Magic Link?

Two styii? I'll have to try that.

I've gotten pretty fast with one stylus, so I don't think I'll be
using a hand writiing recognition system.

Here's a typing trick I've found which saves a great deal of time on
the communicator. Whenever you want to use a set of parens... () or a
pair of quotes "", get both symbols as the same time, then hit the
back arrow to locate the cursor between the symbols, then switch back
to text and go.

Steve,

Our sister company, Sony Electronics, has a wireless solution for e-mail.
Below is their press release from last February. Consult their web page at
http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/Magic/ for more information.

--------------------

GO WIRELESS WITH SONY MAGIC LINK COMMUNICATOR

Wireless Modem Link Software Allows Users to Maximize
Productivity Anytime, Anywhere

SAN JOSE, February 20, 1996
Sony Electronics today announced the availability of its new Wireless Modem
Link* software, an easy-to-use package that lets users connect a Magic Link
communicator to a cellular phone, enabling wireless communication.

With Wireless Modem Link software, a cellular-ready PC modem card and a
cable, users can now send faxes, send or receive e-mail, and access the
Internet via their cellular phone. This wireless solution is available for
both models of the Magic Link communicator (PIC-1000 and PIC-2000).

"Sony wanted to develop a wireless option that takes advantage of existing
cellular phone services," said Alex Gruzen, director of marketing for Sony
Electronics Personal Information Company. "The Wireless Modem Link is an
affordable and simple solution that allows customers to use the cellular
phone they already own with the Magic Link communicator."

Gruzen said that Sony's Wireless Modem Link software is easy to install and
offers an intuitive touch-screen interface. With this software, the Magic
Link communicator automatically recognizes when a modem card is inserted,
immediately bringing up the appropriate selection menu to initiate a
wireless connection. Wireless Modem Link supports two popular
industry-standard cellular modem
PC cards, the APEX MobilePlus V.32 bis or V.34 and the AT&T KeepInTouch card.

The Wireless Modem Link software is compatible with most popular brands of
cellular phones made by AT&T, GE/Ericsson, Mitsubishi/DiamondTel, Motorola,
NEC and Nokia/Technophone. The software also supports Metricom's Ricochet,
a wireless modem and data-service that gives users on-line access to the
Internet or local and wide area networks. The Wireless Modem Link package
is now available directly from Sony for a retail price of $49.95.

The PIC-2000 Magic Link product is the latest addition to Sony's line of
personal intelligent communicators. This powerful, flexible communications
tool includes a backlit screen, an industry-standard 14.4K modem, 2 MB
memory, dual PC Card slots, a speakerphone and Magic Cap Version 1.5
operating system.

Third-party software applications that offer access to the Internet and
existing e-mail systems are currently available for the PIC-2000 Magic Link
communicator. In addition, the communicator also comes bundled with a wide
variety of software packages for on-line services, including America
Online, one of the country's fastest growing online services; AT&T
PersonaLink, an advanced e-mail service that connects customers through
smart electronic mailboxes; and OAG FlightLine, an airline information
service for frequent travelers.

The PIC-2000 Magic Link personal intelligent communicator is now shipping
and has a suggested retail price of $899.95. The PIC-1000 Magic Link
communicator is currently available through major computer retail outlets
for a suggested retail price of $499.95. To purchase the Magic Link
communicators, Wireless Modem Link software, or related products direct
from Sony, customers can call 800-571-SONY.

Based in San Jose, Calif., Sony Electronics Personal Information Company
develops and markets products for the mobile communications market.
Customer service and consumer product information for the family of Magic
Link personal communicators are available seven days a week by calling Sony
at 1-800-55-MAGIC.

Service and support also are available to PC and Macintosh system users
through Sony's Magic Link Information Center on America Online or on the
Magic Link home page on the World Wide Web at
http://www.sel.sony.com/SEL/Magic/.

Doesn't that make the case lining all fuzzy? I rub mine on my jeans
when I can. Note: do not try this when wearing panty hose. Ouch.

Luke, what happens when you hand your Link to a friend? I think you
are very lucky not to have any scratches. I think the screen
protectors cut down on the glare, and provide some drag so it feels
more like writing on paper. Try it, you might like it. As for the
Scramble... you can borrow my Link, I practically have grooves worn in
the protector. It's the only game I'll waste precious Ram card space
for.

Subject: Windows Announcement Hot Off The Rumor Mill!

A friend was speaking to the head Press Relations guy at Metroworks while
I was in the room with him this morning...

According to that phone call, Metrowerks (sp?) will be announcing at
Comdex in November, a *WINDOWS BASED* programmers IDE that compiles to
the Magic Cap!!!!!

Not only that, but they are completely shifting away from the Mac, and
into the Real World of PC-based development environments.

So, all us Windows Programmers can now write simultanious code for MC and
MCW! Yay!

Look for this stock to shoot STRAIGHT up in the VERY near future... get
in *NOW*.

TTYL,
David.

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

I would caution anyone from making any rash assumptions from David Szego's
post.

#1 - He heard this info *second-hand*

#2 - We have had neither confirmation nor denial from Metrowerks

#3 - The project to move the IDE to the PC side has been going for some time
now, so that shouldn't be a surprise. It's a positive for MagicCap & BE
programmers who are Windows based. We'll have to wait for details though...

#4 - About leaving Mac-based developers in the "dust", I'd say that's more
opinion than reality. Remember that Metrowerks has built its reputation in
the Mac community, and that not everyone has gone over to the other side. I
doubt that they would desert their most loyal customer base to chase after a
new market. Partisans (like myself) would mourn the loss of a great company
if they decided to leave the Mac community, but hey - everyone makes their
choices. If they want to migrate to a platfrom that has no elegance, that's
their problem...

Direct any OS-related flames directly to me. I will ignore them, but at
least we'll save bandwidth on the list/newsgroup. If you're a Mac partisan
like me, go ahead and check out to
see how you can help the cause.

Subject: no AOL local access

Magic Cappers:

As of July 1st, AOL has discontinued all SprintNet local access numbers
here in Honolulu, and their remaining AOLNet numbers do not support Magic
Links. Neither Sprint nor the PDA people at AOL have been able to suggest
any solution to this problem other than to suggest using an 800 toll
number (which didn't work anyway) or connecting via a California number.
The guys at AOL have been trying to help, but to no avail. With the
imminent demise of PLink , it looks like I'll be shopping around for a
local ISP for my Magic Link. At least ATT is offering Presto!Mail to it's
soon-to-be former customers.

Joe Solem

P.S. This apparently didn't get posted when I first tried to send it (via
AOL!) last night.

Mike,

Thanks for your suggestion to add a Farcast FAQ to the Sony NTI web site.
There are now FAQ's for both Farcast & Magic Broker linked to entries in
our web product catalog (with FAQ's for other products to follow). The
Farcast FAQ is also in the 'what's new' section.

thanks,
-Paul

Dear MagicCap,
>>
Has anyone actually gotten Outfitter's Direct
to work? I have had nothing but trouble. The
last version I had fianlly worked, but all it
had in the catalog was the latest version of
Outfitter's Direct. I tried to get that, but
it failed. I downloaded version 1.5 from
www.nimble.com, set up my account and tried
to update. - ZILCH - It just rings and rings
and never picks up. So, being optimistic, I called
Nimble's support line. Every menu choice resulted
in a recording telling me the choice was not
valid! After a few choices, it told me I had
exceeded the allowed number of errors and transfered
me to Limbo. I tried calling about 5 times before
I gave up.

I would dearly love to have a way to get new MagicCap
software, but if this is what Nimble has to offer,
I think I'll look elsewhere.
<<

I was told that with PrestLinks, I will be able to download packages from the
internet directly on my link. ( Note that I am NOT talking about UUencoded
packages. A GM employee said that packages on the internet will have a magic
cap tag or something and will enable you to download large packages.). As of
today, I am still unaware of how this works.
