I ordered Presto Links/Mail on June 28th and asked for it to be sent extra fast. They assured me they would send it that day. Somehow their database got messed up and after several calls to them I called and cancelled my order. They called me today and apologized and said it was actually never sent or billed to my credit card. Luckily I got a copy from a friend last Saturday when he received a free copy of it for being a beta tester. After he apologized for their mistake he said that he would like to send me a free copy. I agreed! Thought this was very nice of them. He is in Portland, Oregon area. This doesn't really apply to large text messages through Presto!Mail or any mail. When you connect to Outfitters Direct you dial direct, but I'm sure you knew that. As to why this scenario happened. When Magic Cap is receiving any sort of information be it download, like OD, or mail, I'm not sure about MagicXchange, it basically needs about twice the file/message size in transient(RAM type) memory to get the information. I'm sure OD did this because otherwise you would need over 200k free in main memory to get the 1 package. When the split it up you only need 30k or so for the segments then the transient memory, the extra 15K, can be reused. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. David Devaney, Jr. daviddjr@shaodw.net

When I used a PIC1000 I used to get the same types of response from Sony. My current question for the group ("re:'s" would be nice) is with regards to a 28.8 modem driver. I feel confident that this list is monitored by 'concerned' companies, or at least those that intend to be profitable. I received no conclusive response. Basically, I found there was some interest as long as the price is low. Distribution via Outfitter's Direct would reach a decent sized audience, but the combination of a low list price and that Outfitters will charge a fee based on the size/download time of the app may mean a special deal may need to be negotiated. After that point. Here's the step by step... 1. Connect phone line. 2. Change locality (or create locality if needed) 3. Select Credit Card billing 4. Select "Dial Access code" 5. Ask Presto!Links to dial. 6. Presto!Links says "Dialing Eurekanet" (in my case) 7. The phone dials... lots of beeps... I hear a recording "Your call cannot be completed as dialed"... Ok, no biggie, I've got one of the options set wrong. But which one? If during step 6 Presto!Links would have displayed the number it was dialing, I would have something to go on. In my case, I forgot to tell my new locality the prefix it was dialing was a local toll call, so it didn't dial the area code. But, it took 5 minutes of fiddling to find it. Hi Keith - Sorry to hear that this is getting in the way of your use of Magic Cap. I understand your situation, and wish that there was a way to remedy it. The timeout feature was built into Magic Xchange per General Magic's request that we defend against the user inadvertantly leaving MX connected to their device for an extended period of time and draining the batteries. In hindsight, it seems clear to me that most users using MX will also be running off an AC adapter, so the original intent is somewhat moot. Unfortunately, the current version does clip the INI value to be in range 5..60 (overzealousness on my part), so there is no way to "cheat" through the INI file. > I hope that the next version will have a > larger clock. Don't you? Someone told me that I shouldn't expect to run > my business with this pic. But with the discussion out pour from this > list, I believe it to be possible if the right folks are tuned in. The "never" option that the Mac version has is a good idea, and will be added in the next rev. of the PC version. One suggestion that might alleviate some overhead of reconnecting is to specify a different backup directory on the PC, with nothing in it. This way, you don't have the handshaking overhead of the PC telling Magic Cap what packages to display on the CL shelf, and you don't use up transient memory with the CL shelf contents. Should you wish to access your "real" backup directory, just changing it on the PC will refresh without needing to disconnect and reconnect. Also, Greg's suggestion to copy the Storeroom PC to the desktop is handy. I have my device set up this way, and it's a lot faster to not have to go into the storeroom to connect. Subject: AT&T To discontinue PLink Service
AT&T Announces Discontinuation Of AT&T Personalink Services Business Wire (BWR) 07/11/96 PARSIPPANY, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 11, 1996--AT&T today informed AT&T PersonaLink(SM) Services customers that the service will be discontinued on August 30, 1996. This action is a continuation of AT&T's strategy to shift from proprietary network-based services to the Internet. Introduced in September of 1994, AT&T PersonaLink Services used Telescript(TM) agent technology to enable Sony Magic Link(TM) and Motorola Envoy(TM) personal communicators to perform customized messaging tasks. Customers of Sony Magic Link and Motorola Envoy will still be able to use the devices for mobile messaging through services currently bundled in each device, such as America Online and/or RadioMail(R), or through the use of third-party software. In addition, they will for the first time be able to use these personal communicators to connect to Internet electronic mailboxes and browse the World Wide Web using software from Active Paper, Inc., which was recently acquired by General Magic. AT&T said all the unit's employees will be reassigned to other parts of the company. Telescript software was developed by General Magic, Inc, founded in May 1990 and headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif. AT&T continues to be a member of the General Magic Founding Partners Council, which also includes Cable & Wireless, France Telecom, Fujitsu, Matsushita, Mitsubishi Corp, Mitsubishi Electric, Motorola, Nortel, NTT, Oki, Royal Dutch PTT, Philips, Sanyo, Sony and Toshiba. Applications that require a lot of dragging such as the freeware application Scramble, SNTI's game Gammon and character recognizers such as Grafetti and Scribe are the most likely to cause scratches. Here is the message AT&T sent out this morning. Greg PersonaLink Services July 11, 1996 Dear AT&T PersonaLink Customer: We're grateful you chose PersoanLink Services, and hope you have enjoyed using it. We're proud of it's innovative features and the quality of the service. Unfortunately, it has become clear that, in the future, a proprietary messaging service like PersonaLink will have difficulty competing with new Internet technologies. Therefore, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue the service as of August 30, 1996. Of course, you will still be able to use your Magic Cap personal communicator for messaging with the other services offered that are already bundled in your communicator. Depending on your device, you may have America Online and/or RadioMail. In addition, for the first time you'll be able to use your personal communicator for mobile Internet connections using software that will be made available to you. To make the transition smooth and trouble-free for you, we are offering the following package: Software To enable you to use an alternative messaging service, AT&T is mailing you a coupon valued up to $150 which you can apply toward the purchase of one of the following: - QuickLink (for connection to QuickMail e-mail service) - Mail on the Run! (provides connectivity to cc:Mail or Microsoft Mail) - Presto!Mail 1.5 (for access to any Internet Service Provider e-mail account) We'll send you detailed product information for each of these software packages via PersonaLink, so please check your mailbox for information. Sony will ship the software, so please mail your coupon to them at: Sony Fulfillment Center 8500 Leesburg Pike Suite 501 Vienna, VA 22182 Waiver of PersonaLink Service Subscription and Wireless Activation Fee You will not be charged the AT&T PersonaLink Services monthly subscriber fee of $9.95 retroactively from May 1 until August 30, 1996. (You will continue to be charged for faxing.) For Motorola Envoy customers, we'll issue you a $99.00 credit for the AT&T Wireless PersonaLink Services activation fee. (We'll continue to charge you for usage.) Internet Access As a convenience to you, we're sending you free start-up software for AT&T WorldNet Service* (a Macintosh version will be available later this year). Please note that this software will not work with your Magic Cap-based communicator. AT&T WorldNet Service has minimum requirements of an IBM-compatible PC, 386 or better processor, Windows 3.1 or Windows 95, 8MB RAM, and 11MB free hard disk space. - if you are an AT&T long-distance customer, you'll receive: five free hours of monthly use for a year, if you register on or before December 31, 1996 ($2.50 per hour after five hours) or $19.95 monthly unlimited access - if you aren't an AT&T long distance customer, you'll receive: three hours per month at $4.95 ($2.50 per hour after three hours) or $24.95 monthly unlimited access. To become an AT&T long-distance customer, please call 1-800-288-0101. * Local, long distance or 800 facility access charges to reach AT&T WorldNet Service, and additional access charges or taxes that may be imposed on subscribers or on AT&T WorldNet Service, may apply to all usage. I have not tried it, so I have no opinion to share other than it has garnered mixed reviews on this list. It is a free download if you are a Compuserve subscriber; If you are not, you will either have to subscribe conventionally using a PC or Mac and download it yourself, which would conveniently establish an account for you to access when you do load the package, or you could get someone else who already has an account to download it onto a floppy for you and install it using Magic XChange and hope you can sign up for an account using that package. Try calling Compuserve and run it by them- maybe they will send it to you on disk. That would be a smart marketing move on their part; Then again I have not seen a great deal of savvy marketing by any of the entities involved with MagicCap other than General Magic and Active Paper. And after all that you may find that it is a lame-o access package that does nothing well (like another online service package for communicators that I could mention) and figure out for your self that Presto!Mail was the way to go all along. Give it a shot anyway- results may vary. As for myself, I will await the delivery of my copies of Presto!Mail and !Links as well as the WorldNet startup kit which AT&T promises to send gratis, and go from there. Other posters to the list have written that after you sign up with the proprietary software, P!Mail and !Links can access the account, as can any PPP capable software. Hi Magicappers, This is a reply to my own message to test replying to a message from the list. As I stated before I changed the name of the list's email address from Internet to Magic Cap to see what the address stamp on the envelope says. I think it should say Magic Cap via 'my ISP' like with certain individuals who have two email addresses on my unit. It DOESN'T say that it still says Internet via 'my ISP'. We'll see what happens. Well it didn't work. It didn't even get out of my Out Box. I got a RCPT error and was told to verify the address. So I moved it to the In Box and invoked the "Collect Names" program. The name card I got had just My name as the email address, since I was replying to a message I sent. As i asked before has anyone noticed a problem replying to a list message? One where it doesn't really get to the list. Could this have something to do with the Reply Return program? Thanks for putting up with me. Guess its my turn to be OTR. Actually, AT&T WorldNet is using open, well-documented protocols. Their service offers standard PPP, authenticated using CHAP, an approved PPP protocol for verification of your identity and right to use the service. Currently, CHAP is not supported on all platforms (It's supported for drivers with WinSock, Linux, most UNIX variants, &c, &c - it's not some Redmond, Washington thorn in our side...) Notably, the Mac's existing PPP drivers have not adopted CHAP, which is why Macintosh access is lagging Windows. This isn't a case being proprietary, but a case of an ISP being ahead of the technology curve; ironically now it's the communications client's turns to catch up. It's admittedly annoying from the Mac side, but I firmly believe that AT&T's choice of CHAP for authentication was the right one, and one I would have made if I were launching a nationwide ISP service in my free time... I wouldn't panic yet. I called AT&T right after seeing the post about the discontinuance of service to see if I could acquire the Telescript stuff to put on the ISP I am planning on starting. I don't know if he really understood me but he said that they were planning on using the stuff so I wasn't available. I don't know if he just meant the hardware or what. If anyone wants to help I am interested in acquiring this technology. I had asked GM a while back what I would need to essentially start my own Telescript Server but they never got back with me. I am still interested in adding this onto the ISP I am planning. Yes I know about Tabriz but I assume it is the same as with Active Web Tools where there is something else I need to do what I want. I don't just want the Web stuff I want what every Magic Cap adopter has been looking for since the beginning: Ordering theater tickets, making dinner reservations, and sending flowers just by tapping a few buttons and sending an agent to do all the work. This is why I got a Magic Link and started using Magic Cap. I actually got one when they were $599 at Office Depot then returned it because Market Square wasn't available. I then bought one for $399 a few months later, after Market Square was supposed to have been released. I kept it and was very pleased when Presto!Mail came out. Sorry to be so babble on about nothing. "Yes, David's Magic Link, This Is Your Life!" David Devaney, Jr. daviddjr@shadow.net
