Prettysure you're way wrong. I'm using NScape 3.0b5 and Eudora to WebBrowse
and mail resp. I understand that Active Paper used Worldnet as their test
ISP, so I'm _sure_ that connecting is possible!

I posed the Q to the group, rather than going to WorldNet's or GM's tech
support because I trust y'all; collectively we're way more smart than
anyone's tech support (and have a higher level of motivation for making
these technologies work for the good of everyone in this community.)

Thanx for the (multiple) resps. I'll keep searching for an ans and report
back any success.

Subject: large text messages under presto!mail 1.5

It is a well known feature, er, failure under MagicCap that large text
messages cannot be received on either MagicCap 1.0 or MagicCap 1.5. Large
in this case is anywhere from 45k for the Envoy to 50 or 60k for the PICs.

Has anyone tried receiving text messages of this size or large using the
new Presto!Mail 1.5 on any flavoer of communicator?

Thanks,
Greg Satz

Subject: Card file problem

Can anyone think of a reason why I might have lost the right hand
column menu bar in my card file? If I am looking at any of my name
cards I can't change them or even add new ones for that matter. I just
have a blank space to the right of the card/cards. I haven't done
anything dramatic to my Envoy, nothing before or after this problem
materialized. I just woke up this morning and there it was.
Ant help would be greatly appreciated (the Motorola WDG is currently
helping as well).
Thanks,
Jon Whitney

Subject: Phone Number

One thing I wish Presto!Links would always do is display the number it
is dialing when it is trying to connect to the ISP. I was travelling
over the weekend, and I wanted to check out a friend's web page.
Unfortunately, since Presto!Links didn't display the number it was
dialing, it took a lot of trial and error to find the combination of
settings needed to get out of the hotel, connect to AT&T, use my
credit card number, etc...

It easy to resolve these issue if you know what number its trying to
dial. If not, all you get are those user-friendly telephone tones, or
a recording telling you its not a working number.

One trick I discovered during this is to try an collect your e-mail
first. The e-mail features always report what its trying to dial.

SoftModem will allow vendors to implement a full V.32 modem with out
a modem chipset. All the work is done in the CPU. The V.32 version
is available now with a V.34 version running in the labs (according
to Marc Porats' statement at the press event). The big advantage is
of course cost and real estate savings.

If you recall, NeXT used a software modem in the old Cube machines.
The big difference is that NeXT used a full DSP chip, the technology
from General Magic uses the system CPU, although I believe it requires
a MAC (Multiply Accumulate) instruction which may not be in every CPU
out there.

Note that this technology is not limited only to Magic Cap but can be
licensed by others to lower system costs. Note also that since the
SoftModem uses the main CPU, peformance of the rest of the system is
affected when downloading your favorite monster Web page.

Nope. I must not have been clear. The dialup number was fine. The
problem was the changing locality (Hotel vs Home) coupled with my
Credit Card and trying to reach AT&T. I had all of those issues to
resolve, but I wasn't able to see what number it was dialing.

Did it dial the 8 to get an outside line?
Did it dial the AT&T prefix to avoid another long distance company?
Did it dial my Credit Card number?
It was a local-long distance prefix; did it dial the area code?

I really want to hear from those who are not and if you have any damage

The reason i ask is i never used one on my zoomer, and i don't use one
on my pilot, and i'd like to stop using one on my 2000, but Sony
screens are expensive to replace not to mention not liking the idea of
my 2000 getting more than an arms reach away let alone handing it off

I would suggest using protection from day one.

I read this in one or more writeups in computer journals when I was
actively shopping for a PDA. I think they were Pen Computing, and
Computer Shopper in a big PDA comparison they did some time back last
year.

I have never seen proprietary connectors for sale in supply catalogs. I
wonder, however, if a certain company who has very recently been stuck
with a supply of defective cables intended to fit a certain wireless
modem wouldn't part with them either individually or in bulk at a
deeply discounted price? This would be doubly cool as one could also
acquire the plug for the modem in question in the same transaction.
Seeing as most computer people have heard of the fate of Packard Bell
in that flap over selling recycled parts in new machines, the cables
may just be laying around unused, if they have not been discarded
already.

I bought my PIC-1000 three days before leaving on a two month trip to
Europe sort of as an experiment to see how it would work for keeping a
journal. (It was perfect BTW) But I didn't have time to buy anything like
a scren protector for it. I also spent a lot of time playing Solitaire
during long bus, train and plane rides and there are some very noticeable
worn spots on the screen, and a few scratches.

But since then I don't think I've worn it out as badly, and I've been
using an external keyboard for most of my writing. I'm not using a screen
protector at the moment, but I think I will be getting some soon. If I
were doing a lot of hand writing, I would definitely want them.

Scratches appear as dust particles are dragged across the screen. Keeping
your screen clean does a lot to reduce scratching.

I have a PIC 2000, and after noticing a few scratches on the screen, decided I
had better get some screen protectors. I use the WriteRight protectors and
really like them. I noticed a huge difference when using Graffiti.

The instructions say that each protector lasts about 4 weeks - I am still on

Greg,

At this time we have tested up to 64K message testing with 100% reliabilty.
We are aware that messages over 100K will most likely not go through.

Hope this helps,

Dear Magic,
In settings (communication) the maximum time is 60 minutes before
"disconnect inactive communicator".I need to write a memo to this list
every 65 minutes!!!!!!!! Doesn't this annoy anyone else? I have mine
attached to my work pc 14 hours a day and I don't like having to run to
the storeroom to tap pc icon every time I need to make a note or send a
memo. Kind of un productive. I hope that the next version will have a
larger clock. Don't you? Someone told me that I shouldn't expect to run
my business with this pic. But with the discussion out pour from this
list, I believe it to be possible if the right folks are tuned in.

A work around is to copy the little computer button in the storeroom to
your desktop. That way it is really convenient to reconnect to Magic
Xchange. The Mac version of Magic Xchange provides a "never" option to time
to disconnect. I am surprised the PC version would lack the same
feature. Have you tried setting it to zero?

I received a note from someone who tried on a pic-1000 and said they
couldn't get a 64k message through.

Always use protection!

I started out without protection, but soon had large scratches caused
by a rough spot on the stylus itself. Sony replaced the screen under
warranty and since then, I have used the WriteRight protectors from the
Concept Kitchen. I have only used two in the last year, but probably
should change them a little more often. Lately when I hand my Link to
someone, I have to explain to them that the screen is not supposed to
look that bad. (I have a cool pattern where the Scramble board is).

Dear Magic,
I tried taking a picture and setting it on my desk, but them I got into
the "memory management trick" so I dumped it. Haven't tried copy or is
it the same thing? The zero is a great idea, but it starts at 5 and
ends at 60? I called Xchange and they suggested "file mgr-mxchange.ini"
and to change it there. Tony tried 80 or 90 (first time = 0, off after
=60) but it set timer to 15. When I tried it, I went for 120, it set
timer to 15, killed my mouse, crashed my pc and I spent another 45
minutes (un productive) putting it all back together. Kind of makes
that CB handle stick!

Large packages and probably also messages are possible to receive, but
the ML has a REALLY hard time doing it barefoot. A month or two ago I
was going download happy and among many useful and fun freeware
packages I downloaded in MXChange format was Outfitters Direct 1.4.
When I installed and tried to use it, all I got back was a catalog and
message saying that OD 1.4 was obsolete and 'Press Here To Order 1.5.'
I did, and a curious thing happened. A package of about 15k or so,
called 'Transfer' or some such arrived, and then over a period of 10-15
minutes the OD 1.5 package came in, and it was 111k! Anybody know
anything about this?

I discovered an error in the script I sent last week. The error was due to
pulling the script directly out of the Data package using word. The line

should actually read

expect "incorrect" :$o2 "continue"

Please accept my apologies.

I have the correct script listed below...

Dear Magic,

I mentioned that same thing during beta, that PM doesn't give the option of
'America Online via (ISP)' and forces me to AOL via AOL (I assume because it
finds an AOL stamp on my card).

I'm not sure why that is. I would guess a workaround would be to change all
of your AOL stamps to Internet, but I haven't tried it...

Not really enough info for an educated guess. The fact that everything else
works across different ISP's leads me to believe your SMTP settings are wrong
or corrupted (did you use Custom setup?). Check with your ISP to confirm SMTP
server name, and make sure you have the full domain name (ie
mail.earthlink.net as opposed to just 'mail'- I made that mistake).

I am using the Write Right protectors from Concept Kitchen (kdmc@aol), and am
very happy with them. They go on easy, the bubbles go away in a couple of
days, and they don't imprint easily. A little Pledge and you can write like
lightning. A bit expensive over the home-made variety, but they last quite a
while and I don't have the patience to cut the little squares. (CK, you can
send the free samples to ...)

I didn't have one on my pic1k and ended up putting a gaf in it with some
unknown sharp object. I also use Grafitti exclusively, and if you look close
you get wear on the screen in the writing box.

With the pic1k they are much more noticable, because you are using reflective
light that tends to glare. With the pic2k and backlighting, you get used to
em quick-
