Subject: 28.8 card modems

I'm definately going to have to agree with Kevin on the support note.
I have used both Magic-Link and Envoy and have endlessly recieved the
help I need. Recently I have addressed countless questions to this
list and to Motorolas help desk only to be greeted by the employees of
Motorola instantly. When I used a PIC1000 I used to get the same types
of response from Sony.
My current question for the group ("re:'s" would be nice) is with
regards to a 28.8 modem driver. I feel confident that this list is
monitored by 'concerned' companies, or at least those that intend to be
profitable. Maybe if a company were to introduce a 28.8 pcmcia modem
with a MC driver they would sell a few. Wouldn't
PrestoLinks/PrestoMail be cool if it ran at socially acceptable speeds?
Just an idea, response to the list would be appreciated.

Subject: Posting from my communicator

Hello,

Well I think we already went through this once but I seem to be having problems again and I just wanted to check this, AGAIN. Sorry about wasting bandwidth but I'm sure there have been "lost" posts from other people too. I have a PIC1000 and am using Presto!Mail 1.5 to send email. It doesn't appear that tapping the reply button to reply to a post to the list sends the email to the list. I think it just sends it to the Poster. I have the option set to have a copy of messages I post to the list sent back to me. When I reply with my communicator I never see this copy.

This may have something to do with P!Mail but I doubt it. Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone think why this might be happening?

I have changed the heading of the email address for the list from "Internet" to "Magic Cap" so it should say Magic Cap via my ISP from now on. I assume it should say the correct "via" or let you choose if the person is in your card file. I will see if it does in the future when I receive an email from the list and try to reply.

Any insight on this would be appreciated. I don't know if it applies to communicators with v1.5.

Thanks!

David Devaney, Jr.

It would also be very nice if this modem had a memory card built in, so-to-speak. Then thos of us with a PIC 1000 with only one slot could use it and not have to worry about trying to cram pertinent packages in main memory.

Another thing that would be nice is a driver to allow the use of an external modem from the MagicPort. I think the has been discussed before though.

I have also now had Presto Links and Mail running since last Saturday.
I am enjoying both packages. I plan to drop my Personalink account in
a few weeks and just use my new Netcom address. I also just
discontinued using my AOL account.

I have a PIC-1000 with a 2 meg (used) Grid SRAM card which I purchased
from Surplus Technologies (214-224-7906). It works great.

You will definitely need a 2 meg SRAM card to use a PIC-1000 for WEB
browsing.

I have found some bugs in Presto 'Stuff' but no show stoppers. I can
connect to Netcom probably 90% of the times that I try.

What we need here is a company that would produce a product along the

28.8 modems.

A shot in the dark...

Have you tried packing up one or two of your hallway applications,
then unpacking them? Basically, doing those things which (ab)normally
make the Hallway too long. You might consider installing a new package
or two, even if you end up trashing them later.

This is pretty remarkable if true. In this day of standards it seems like a
huge step backwards. I can understand from a customer service point of view
why they would wish they could do this.

Actually, that's not completely true. You have to use their software, with
Windows 95, to setup an account. Once that's done, and you've got the funky
username/password combination (which is different than your email
username/password) you can use other software.

I use Windows NT to connect and just transferred the signon information from
the 95 dialer into a RAS setup.

They do require the use of CHAP as the authorization protocol. So if you're
PPP software doesn't support CHAP, you're out of luck.

I haven't gotten Preso!Mail but I think there is a comment on the Magic web
page that there is a problem using it with Worldnet.

I hope they fix it since I'd really like to use it to check my mail when I'm
on the road.

This would be a wonderful product but somehow I don't believe it would be
very successful. Low prices on things like pc cards assumes a very huge
market. The market for a combined modem/sram pc card probably wouldn't be
large enough to justify the product at a reasonable price.

This would require a special cable which I think has also been requested on
this list recently. If it were just software I am sure someone would have
already done it by now. :-)

The 28.8kbit question is whether PrestoMail/MagicCap/PIC/Envoy will run at
higher speeds.

I had virtually no trouble connecting to PPP, and browsing the web,
including mapquest.com. I had to play around with the POP login &
password, but got it to work. I believe the settings are:

POP server = postoffice.worldnet.att.net
login = (mail address without the @worldnet.att.net)
password = (unencrypted password you used when registering. In
contrast, the PPP password is the encrypted one found in your att.sr
file.)

Sotware?

Maybe you can only register with the AT&T disks, but you CAN access an
existing account on a ML.

Is this the Mac adapter cable or the PC adapter cable you attached the
serial converter to? Could you have needed a null modem adapter (since the
cable already acts as a sort of null modem, you need to reverse it...)

Now this is what bugs me - if you had a real serial connection, you wouldn't
need a modem driver, just the appropriate commands.

Could any hardware people cast any light on this subject? I know that there
is a signal difference that the adapter cable is supposed to compensate for,
and I do know that there is an all-in-one cable with the print drivers built
into a minature rom (which I assume is self-sensing and uploads whichever
driver you need.) However, standalone modems only communicate over a serial
connection (ie, ATA, etc.).

Is the problem the ML, the cable, or the modem?

I am not a hardware person but I have followed this issue on the mailing
list where it has been explained a few times. [An aside, has anyone set up
a WAIS search on the MagicCap mailing list archives?]

Basically the connector on the side of the communicator that plugs into our
desktop computers isn't a serial port but a high-speed bus. Apparently the
bus can be configured to speak serial asynchronous bits. With the GDT cable
I believe it can also act like a parallel port as well. It would seem the
communicator hardware designers decided a higher-speed bus interface that
could be converted to other interface types would be more flexible. The
goal was a simple connection mechanism that would be easy for the customer
to use and require little to no configuration.

In hindsight it limited the choices for the customer base since very few
cable types are available. It isn't clear why so few cable types are
available. Small market size and cable cost (mfg and design) are my
guesses. I never did learn why it took GDT so long to get their cable to
market.

At a GM developer conference a magic bus connector was shown that connected
to a VGA monitor and displayed what was on the communicator's screen. I
believe this example conveys the design goals quite well.

I agree that a magic bus to DB25 (or whatever the standard modem connector
type is these days) would be quite useful. I don't know if the cable would
garner many buyers, however.

I would settle for being able to spend 5 bucks on the magic bus
connector itself and just roll my own cables. While I was at it I would
give a multi plug connect cable a shot. The magic link device specs
call for the magic bus to have the SCSI-like ability to support 7
devices. Another promise of the platform that has not been realized. A
docking station for the ML that contains a vga monitor, speakers, a
28800 modem, and some more sram or other memory that could be used to
facilitate cache and storage of web pages might present a few hurdles,
but the port should be up to it. And at a listed speed of 38400 bps,
there is no reason why a 28800 or even 33600 external modem could not
be made to work at their maximum rated speed if the ML could be made
compatible with the modem.
