Subject: Fixing Downtown
Hi Cappers, I have been experiencing a strange behavior and I am wondering if it is making my PIC-1000's memory even tighter than normal. At the end of my downtown street I have 18 blank screens. 1) Is this eating memory? 2) How can I remove it? Even if it is not eating memory, it would be very convenient to option-click the arrow to get to the farcast building. Thanks Kevin Fries

Hi Cappers, Well it seems that I started a fire storm about Sony's marketing department....GOOD! The marketing is bad. I would just like to add one more point. I have run into many people that think this is just some fringe high-tech gizmo or toy. Not unless they sit with it for more than 10 minutes do they realize that the SML is definitely no toy. The only way that these will ever take off is if they appear at places like CompUSA, Computer City and Egghead (all three sell USR Pilots). Maybe if Sony did a big blowout on PIC 1000 and advertised it, like the good guys did, they would probably sell a bunch of them. Then, like myself, many people will probably decide that this thing is so useful but slightly under powered. I am already considering an upgrade to a PIC 2000. The way I found out about them was a display at Office Depot. I sat and thought it was cute, for about 5 minutes. That was about all it took to realize that this was a real productive tool. I can show you one IS department that would would consider using these for communication. I showed him mine one day for about 2 minutes and emailed him some info off my PIC. He was so impressed that if anyone at Sony wants to wake up and deal, you could probably nail the entire state of Colorado. So, it you send me information, I will forward it to the guys that could use it. Please include a way for him to get a hold of someone that can act as the facilitator. Sincerely Kevin Fries

Hi Kevin, I'm not sure about question 1 so I'll let someone else field that. As for Question 2, you can remove it by going Downtown, Option-Tapping the keyboard (to bring up the label maker), typing/making a label that says "delete" (without the quotes of course), and dropping it on the street where you want the street to end. I usually drop it under the bottom right hand corner of the last building on the street. This will remove any extra space. David Devaney, Jr. daviddjr@shadow.net

Very Interesting. On my Envoy, the downtown screens cut-off. The only way I can get to some buildings is to use the directory. Also, RadioMail is listed twice in the directory. It seemed to have happened after I installed farcast. I also started having substantial memory problems at that time, even thoug I have 4mb RAM. Was your downtown problem farcast-related? However if Farcast caused your problems then I am more suspicious. If you have a full backup of your main memory before you installed Farcast you should be able to restore from it. I was in Office Depot this weekend. I notice that the SML had a clearance price of $299. When I asked about the clearance and the price, they told me it was for the display model and the item was on "No Restock". The assistance manager said that it was because Sony had released the 2000. He didn't say that until I told him about 2000. Office Depot is the only place in town (that I have found) that carries the SML. CompUSA is selling them at list on Special Order (Sony is selling them at $100 off list). Didn't see the USR box at CompUSA. Or the Newton. The sales rep. I was talking to did know what the SML was. Although he was going to buy the Newton. I would jump on the 2000 band waggon if the price wasn't so high. So I'm looking for a used/reconditioned 2000 or I'll buy a 1000 and move to the 2000 when/if I out grow the 1000. I think Sony could sell these things like hot cakes if they put their mind to it. If the company I'm contracted to took a look at it, I think they would buy one for each Exec. (Boys and their toys) If only Sony would sit up and take notice (And give). -Cliff #includeBTW, I really do like the SML and most of Sony's products. I was hooked on the SML in 2 min. I have spent the last 3 weeks researching prices, options, and features. Thank you discussion list.

When you pack up and unpack a package with a location downtown, the downtown location is moved to the end of the street. I believe deleting changes has the same effect. The wireless toolbox controls when the RadioMail building moves. This is a nice feature in that if you don't want a particular site downtown, you can pack up its package and it moves out for good. Subject: Re: Problem with PIC
Sony could start by advertising the ML in their OWN personal electronics catalog (available at Fry's, Barnes & Noble, etc). It hasn't been in the last two issues that I have seen. You know your marketing is non-existant when your employees are more familiar with the competitor's product (Newton) than they are with your own (MagicLink). Part of the problem with Sony's marketing could be the fact that MagicLinks are, from what I understand, selling much better than Sony anticipated. Sony may see no need to spend money to sell a product that is doing very well as-is. Also, as I recall, someone mentioned at the BAMCUG meeting that Sony likes being in the PDA market with MagicCap, but they are tired of being the frontrunner for the OS--they would like someone else to take the lead. My guess is that this is a financial decision. And I bet the MagicLink line does not have any marketing visibility because it does not have any visibility in the upper echelons of the company. Why is the new Pilot so popular so suddenly? 1. It is small enough to fit into a coat pocket or purse. 2. Its intro retail price is much less than other PDA's. 3. It appears to be simple to use for doing basic organizer tasks. 4. It comes with the hardware and software to keep it in synch with your PC organizer software. 5. It is being advertised. The company that makes the Pilot used to be in the PDA-software-only business like General Magic, but they came to the realization that the only way their software was going to become popular was if *someone* created and marketed a popular PDA. General Magic may be forced to do something similar if they cannot find a champion to take Sony's place. Magic Cap is a GREAT OS for communicating and organizing information, but it needs a machine with a smaller entry price. If Sony continues to sell the ML-1000, that might work. Once GM releases MC for Windows they should feel confident in being able to market it and then use that marketing muscle to talk about all of the wonderful MC devices that can be used with MC for Windows.

> > Someone mentions that someone was selling protective covers > for the screens > for the MLs. Can someone give me the name and phone of the > company... Or > even better, if anyone's come up with a cheaper solution, please > let me know... Chris, The product you are referring to is the New WriteRight Screen Enhancements from The Concept Kitchen. Below is some information regarding the WriteRights as well as ordering information and various means of contacting us. For those on the list who have seen this information before, our apologies for the use of bandwidth! In keeping with the tradition of being the first to market with innovative solutions for mobile computing platforms, The Concept Kitchen recently announced the availability of the New WriteRightx Screen Enhancements, offering users of PDAs and handheld computers dramatic improvements in the performance of their pressure-sensitive screens. The innovative material used in the New WriteRights was engineered to feature the same level of screen protection as the original WriteRights, while also providing users with a number of key benefits not offered by the original: 1. Simulates feel of writing on paper: The New WriteRights provide an improved writing surface that almost perfectly simulates the feel of writing on paper with a normal pen. The new surface of the WriteRights also eliminates the "sticky" feel experienced with some screen protection devices. 2. Improved handwriting recognition: The material used in the New WriteRights also has the effect of increasing the accuracy of handwriting recognition for PDA users who have been frustrated by the unnatural feel of writing on a glass screen with a plastic stylus. 3. Increased visibility: The New WriteRights provide improved light-transmission and greater clarity than the original design, affording users the highest visibility of any screen protection device on the market. In addition, the New WriteRights feature a slightly variegated surface that softens reflections and reduces screen glare to further increase the visibility of the PDA screen. 4. Improved surface durability: The New WriteRights prevent the pen impressions experienced with some screen protection devices which could leave behind shadows of the user's pen input and impair screen visibility. 5. Simplified installation and removal: The New WriteRights are much easier to install than the original design, eliminating the possibility of bubbles becoming trapped under the Screen Enhancement. To simplify application, use and removal, the WriteRight has been designed to cling directly to the surface of the PDA screen. To apply, the user simply peels the WriteRight film from the protective backing and applies it to the PDA screen. When removal is desired, the user need only peel the plastic film from the screen and the PDA is immediately restored to its original condition. The Concept Kitchen pioneered the first screen protection device for PDAs with the release of the original WriteRight Screen Enhancements nearly two years ago. Officially recommended by Apple and Sony Magic Link Technical Support, the WriteRights have become the top selling screen protection device in the world, currently protecting over 10,000 PDAs worldwide. Each individual screen enhancement has an estimated life of four weeks. Normal pricing for the WriteRight 4-pack is $11.95, for the 8-pack is $18.95 and for the 12-pack is $24.95. However, we are currently offering our 12-pack at a special rate of 10% off the normal $24.95 price, or only $22.45. This provides a much better value than our other offerings and, as such, has been our most popular package to date. Shipping and handling charges are $2.95 per pack to all US and Canadian addresses. Shipping and handling to all other international addresses is $4.95 via US Air Mail. All funds are payable in US dollars via VISA/Mastercard, American Express or personal check. To place an order, simply complete the order information listed below and forward it to us at any of the E-mail addresses also listed below. Dear MagicCap, I thought I would add my comments about Presto!Mail and Presto!Links, plus some thoughts on the Magic Link platform and other philosophical rambles. PrestoMail: I received the package on Saturday, so I've only had three days to play with it. So far, I am impressed that it works as advertised. I saved everything to my ram card, pulled my batteries, and re-personalized my link. No PersonaLink means more memory for the rest ... I have gained at least 100K. I recommend people do this once they are firmly decided on switching over from PersonaLink to an ISP, but BACKUP FIRST! Suggestions: 1. An obvious (to me) missing rule is collect mail TO a.b@c.d, for those of us with shared mailboxes. 2. There should be a scriptable facility to add rules like the above (heard this before somewhere ?). 3. My From: header field seems messed up. Is this me or P!Mail ? 4. Best (my ISP) should be in the list - they are very standard and things basically work out of the box. I have occasional glitches when connecting, but then I do on my Mac too. 5. Provide the 1.0f MagicCap update somewhere accessible to PrestoMail/Link users, as there's no other way of getting it if PersonaLink isn't an option.. 6. Fix the MagicCap subject line so I can type subjects longer than the one in this message ! 7. Include the fixes/features from the various necessary freeware packages in Presto!Mail, such as InternetFixer, ReplyReturn, Quoter, Alarmed Again, UUDecode (I probably din't need it now, but I might like the functionality available more visibly than embedded in the MIME layer in Presto!Mail). Clearly many of these are MC1.0 specific, but it could be an optional package. Space is so precious on a Pic1000 that any memory saved is worthwhile. And if anyone is wondering, you can probably forget using Presto!Links on a PIC-1000 unless you have either a 2MB card (as I have) or absolutely nothing else on your 'Link. Since I have 200K of names and addresses for starters ... 8. Make Option-tapping the inbox get a summary automatically, or at least have a rule to be able to choose which action. Presto!Links: Wow! It WORKS! But, 'wot, no frames ?'. Since frames are often used to speedup page access/update, it's a shame they aren't in. Maybe 1.1 ? The JavaVM can wait until 1.2 ... Stopping PersonalLink: Despite various hiccoughs, AT&T PersonaLink hasn't been *too* bad for mail, but I'm discontinuing my account for several reasons: 1. AT&T showed very little interest in advancing the service beyond what already existed: The Mall never showed up and the number of available mail rules was never enhanced. In other words they never really offered a true TeleScrpt service - all of the disadvantages of being different from IP (SMTP) mail, but none of the advantages it should have had. 2. They never provided a MagicMail to mime gateway, which would have allowed me to send graphics or rich text (or packages) to other non-PL customers and basically gotten over some of problem 1. 3. There is no forwarding facility to non-PL addresses. 4. Mail that bounced usually came back without the original contents. 5. The Daily News kept insisting on deleting messages. 6. UserIDs like A5436764566 suck ! Thoughts: FarCast is neat, but it is not based on TeleScript. It is what the Daily News should have been. Then it would have been a reason to keep PersonaLink. I would pay an additional good sum of $$ for a replacement ROM for my PIC-1000 without all the AOL and AT&T stuff with the PrestoMail stuff instead ;-). Then all I would need is a new PC Card with a 28.8 modem AND 2MB of SRAM. Anyone else interested in this hardware+software combination upgrade ? But $800 for a PIC-2000 that isn't upgradeable is, well, out of the question. Andy Belk was: Anyd@attpls.net Now: Anyd@FrogAndRosbif.org

Poster: AnydGreat summary on the Presto! packages and your thoughts about Magic Cap. > Suggestions: > 1. Unless you get all your multiple account mail delivered to a single mailbox, you should be able to collect mail from multiple accounts. If all you mail is delivered to a single mailbox, you could also use a mail filter program to break apart again into different files/mailboxes. > 5. Provide the 1.0f MagicCap update somewhere accessible to PrestoMail/Link > users, as there's no other way of getting it if PersonaLink isn't an option.. This is a really good suggestion. Maybe it will appear on the General Magic Web site. > 6. Fix the MagicCap subject line so I can type subjects longer than the one in > this message ! I don't believe it makes sense to provide extra features for people who may not want them. This is the old bundle everything together for those who want it all vs. letting everyone assemble the pieces they want individually. ReplyReturn and UUDecode are still useful for Presto!Mail users. Thanks Luke, Believe it or not, the silly icon just sits on top the tote bag. It no longer appears in the scheduler. Its a bug I would say. Kevin Fries

I agree 100% that GM should find another mfg. I disagree that they should target a smaller PDA. There is a great gap in the Pilot and simple organizers and a laptop. I use my PIC2000 for almost everything. I beleive it is the perfect size. A little more power would be helpfull... I wish IBM would make thw PDA platform with MC as an os Scott -------------------------- From the desk of Scott Doniger...
